Dan,

One swallow does not a summer make.

You approach works for you. That's great.

That hardly extrapolates to a population however. I am a mathematician and physicist. I'd love to work in PR (probably pays better) but regretably I'm stuck with science. I'm not sure why my phyisical condition is of any relevance at all? I'm a vegan and run 30kms weekly.

My point is simple. In this forum, your observations and life experience are quaint but not very relevant. Med doctors spend years training and even more time with countless patients learning how best to treat ailments.

There are too many "Internet physicians" and "Holiday Inn Express experts" willing to offer advice on a range of medical subjects on malaria, diabetes and cancer on SB. In THIS forum, advice is best handled by these specialists from whom it has been requested-medical practioners. Offering advice on how to treat gout (especially controversial flimflam from a known quack), crosses the line between fun and danger. That is my point.

I will respect this opinion--your opinion, and not offer any more gout suggestions. In fact, when I intially posted, I though this was on one of the general scuba forums, and only recognized that I was in the Diving Medicine formum when I saw that Doc Viking was posting ( strong hint).
Clearly my observations are not something that a person with medical problems should utilize as solutions in any way....However, I do think that this diver with gout, should be aware of the "possibilities" of sugar being far more causitive than traditionally discussed as causing gout--aware to the extent of knowing that there are people like Mercola saying this, and that it is an easy enough self-test, to try no sugar for a few days, and then high sugar, and see how the toe feels :)

Anyway, apologies to this forum for my posts on this...I should have left the discussion sooner.... But I never suggested that I was the most mature poster on Scubaboard :D

Dan-Debate over. now after 10 years of veganism, here's my favourite vegan joke:

How many vegans does it take to change a light bulb?

Answer: I have no idea but more importantly, where do you get your protein?

Cheers mate.

Yikes! If there is one topic that will get more people upset than mainstream medical versus Alternatives, it is Vegan versus Meat Eaters :)

I won't jump into this as a debate.... But for me, it is eggs, chicken, red meat, and used to include tuna--but I have dropped this due to high mercury--just does not seem bright to eat tune for lunch every day like I used to :)
Also Whey Concentrate Protein Powder with Chia seeds added for carb source in meal replacement of shake.

Many of my GUE friends are members of the Vegan Mafia :)

Mercola is a snake oil salesman. Deep down, he even knows it. That is why he is clever enough to stay out of the FDA's jurisdiction. He is no different than Enzyte Bob, promising to put more lead in your pencil. Why does he do it? Ever seen his house....... you can google that.

Dan, when you speak of your research..... Does this imply you read something on Merocola's web site, or did google search? Or did you actually do research, you know.... library...multiple, credible primary, secondary and tertiary sources.... that sort of thing....

Have you taken a college level biochemistry course?

What about gross anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology or medicinal chemistry?

How about a research design and statistics course where you learn read and interpret published data and to mathematically accept or reject a hypothesis.

I and I expect others posting on this thread have.

You however, spout science like someone who majored in marketing. That is apparent to any of us who can answer yes to having completed the courses I have mentioned above.

Reck Diver, this is not the forum for you and I to go through another one of your ( "our") petty arguments.
Anyone familiar with our "exchanges", knows that if I say something is white, soon enough you will be jumping in proclaiming how obvious it is that this something is black..... In any event, my majors were Biology, Geology, and Sociology--and yes I did have extensive college level courses that would have me reading journals, and analyzing which articles had conclusions which in no way were supported.

Reckdiver, if you actually were able to read at even a 7th grade level, you should have "noticed" that in my post to TSandM, I referernced a link in a diabetes journal.....It was actually a pretty amazing article, very on-point to science issues that do not gain the traction they should... I would suggest you read it, but then you would have to return to this forum, and have everyone explain the article to you---and I would rather they were not bothered by you :)

Having stayed just last weekend at a holiday inn express I feel qualified to offer some insight. I have not taken all the medical or physiology coursework but if I had most of it would have had diddly squat to do with gout. I have been suffering periodic gout attacks for 25 years. This has forced me to become relatively well versed on this specific subject. Also my wife is a biochemist with more than 20 yrs work in research in immunology and receptor something or another. My son in law is a phamacist. All have taken an obvious interest in my gout attacks. I take allopurinol every day to minimize the uric acid buildup. I also take colcrys for flareups. The latter is hard on the stomach and needs to be taken with food. Hydration is hugely important. Look up gout treatment on the net and you will find a plethora of suggested courses of action. I drink tart cherry juice and it seems to help a bit. I avoid foods high in purines like the devil. Obviously you need to see a physician and not rely on our advice or comments.
I truly do understand the kind of pain that comes with a gout flareup. The first time I had an attack my first instinct was to soak it in hot water - exactly the wrong thing to do. The swelling was so bad I swear I could feel the air move. You have my sympathy. With proper treatment and dietary attention you can minimize the number of flareups and if you have your handy colcrys you can overcome an attack even if it hits during a dive trip (Been there done that). Good luck and best wishes. Oh, and a further note. Gout will go after any joint that has suffered trauma. After major shoulder surgery guess where I had a flareup? Sprain a foot or ankle playing racquetball and BANG, flareup. So if you have an awful pain in some other joint. The big toe is usually the first part of the body to get hit but certainly is not the only vulnerability. As always see your own doctor and blah blah blah. Actually that is very important as some of the treatments require prescriptions.
