Sony has a special on until January 31, 2011 on their "Imagination Studio Suite" for $99 instead of $179. It includes Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, Sound Forge Audio Studio, DVD Architect Studio, Acid Music Studio, Photo Go and more. Really everything that you would require to get started at a great price.

I have found DaVinci Resolve to be incredibly useful and capable, even in the free version - the premium may well be worth it for the extensions, effects and cleanup capability, but, as is, it works very well.
One that I was very surprised by for an inexpensive "color corrector" is Aqua Color Fix. Works on video and photos, and does a bang up job restoring reds to images - for $30, it was definitely worth it to me, and, apparently there is an upgradecoming that will let you process in bulk.

LumaFusion on an iPad works very very well and is inexpensive.

I use ShotCut, which is a Free and Open Source editor and find it works just fine. Had to watch a couple toutorials to get started, but find it to be very capable.

On a Mac, iMovie is no cost and simple to use. I started with that and moved to DaVinci Resolve. Took a couple of their free classes and found the Intro class most useful as a beginner.

If you're on linux, Kdenlive works well.

I am glad you mention ShotCut. I like it very much. You can edit color, white balance, zoom, slo mo, etc., like with those expensive video editors for great price, FREE!

I learned how to edit my GoPro MP4 by watching ShotCut YouTube tutorials.

Here’s an example of my video editing using ShotCut:

I use Dive+ for color correction and iMovie for editing. I also have Davinci Resolve but its much more complex in my opinion.

Holy zombie thread batman. Davinci Resolve..
