Well, to answer the questions I raised, I got in touch with Aquapix and received the following replies:
1. It is the flat lens that could be subject to cracking, and not the camera lens itself
2. The issue is noticed more in the flat glass lenses, and not the original makrolon lenses
3. Distance spacers are being provided with new lenses and are available to previous purchasers of the flat lens
