I just got certified and am starting to research equipment. I'm debating between a regulator and a computer for my first big purchase. I think I have the reg I want picked out, but I'm stumped on computers. What's a good Nitrox-compatible computer (not necessarily air-integrated, as I really don't care about that) that is reliable, has a reasonably conservative algorithm, and won't necessarily break the bank?

Suunto Gekko. Relatively conservative, reliable, and inexpensive (compared to other Suunto Nitrox computers).

I like both the TUSA IQ-800 for a one-mix capable nitrox dive computer and the TUSA IQ-700 for two-mix capable nitrox dive computer.

However, Dive Rite is marketing the 2 mix capable NiTek Plus at a substantial discount currently. The display size of the NiTek Plus (or Scubapro Extender) would be an issue with me, but my eyes are far from perfect.

The Cressi Sub Archimede II is marketed very competitively with the TUSA IQ-700, NiTek Duo, and Apeks Quantum. The user-configurable pO2 alarms in the Archimede II is a nice feature not found on the other similar models I mentioned.

All of these combine bar graph style graphics with numerical displays, which to me is the best approach.
