Good Eats Report from our trip

I got this spelling wrong once before but they are botanos or botanas or something very close to that. The fisherman's co-op next to the cemetery does these...the more beer you order the more food you get. Another place is the tweety bird place on 15 and about 5 or so but it was closed for most the the time I was in Coz this winter. New ownership or something.

If you like the cantinas with the botanas actions, come over to the nice side of town and try El Fish. Corner of Calle 8 and Avenida 10 catacorner from Fratelli. (Which is also a nice place for a little pizza.) Of course speaking of pizza, our neighborhood bar, OHana, makes a nice deep dish.

We got a flight cancelled in December. Took forever to get out of the Cancun airport. For about half a second I considered staying in Cancun. Then I grabbed a guy in a turqoise shirt and told him to get me on the Mayair flight. By 8 pm, we were in O'Hana eating deep dish.

But I digress...

One stop at El Fish, two of us went through about 5-6 beers, had conch dip, cream dip, chips, spiced citrus and cucumber, spicy shrimp soup, and a whole fried fish. Paid only for the beer, around 10 bucks? Of course I was in Dutch when we got back as the wife had NOT eaten....

Botanas! Thanks Marg, I knew you'd know El Fish...I must have walked by it a dozen times and never noticed! On my list now.

I agree with El Jefe... anyone out there who hadn't tried O'hana's, GO! We love that place. Friendly people, very cool atmosphere, and good food. The pizza is not in the cheap eats category, but it's delicious! It's deep enough that you'll have enough left over for lunch the next day Perfect dinner for those cool, windy norte nights...

I did a little googling, and apparently you were bitten by some sort of bug, have/had "rickettsia" or something similar and should see a doctor when you get home.

Rickettsia is a group of bacteria that cause things such as typhus and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. They can be transmitted by bug bites.

Proteus is a group of very common enterobacteria. One is the most common pathogen in human urinary tract infections. They are not transmitted by bugs.

Proteus vulgaris OX19 was used in the Weill-Felix test for typhus, based on antigenic cross-reactivity. Because it has both low sensitivity and low specificity, it isn't used any longer.

We don't really know what the actual test was. If it was a blood culture, that indicates Proteus bacteremia and the patient is probably dead. Since MMM posted it and doesn't even sound as if she's on her death-bed, it's more likely that it was either an immunological study or actually the results of a urine study. In any case, the most likely cause is prior urinary tract infection.

I'm in great health! All I know is that both docs (GP and hearing specialist) said it wasn't anything to be terribly concerned about and that nearly every resident on the island probably has them. However, since they were trying to get to address my hearing loss, they decided they might as well treat this at the same time. The test was a standard blood test. I had a similar test about two-three months beforehand when I had my annual physical and must not have had anything at that time which would cause my GP's eyebrows to raise since he said everything looked good.

I looked it up. It is 'Ohana. I knew there was an apostrophe in there someplace. Guess I went with the Irish apostrophe and not the Hawaiian one.....

Mateo is a cool guy and usually behind the bar at night.
