I'm going to Laurel Lake on the 24-25 to get my advanced open water certification. I'm doing Diver Propulsion Vehicle, Search and Recovery, and Night Diver as my three electives. Deep Diver and Underwater Navigation are the two required courses. I'm really looking forward to it except for the fact I've been informed Laurel Lake is REALLY cold. I may double up on my wet suits or something, I doubt my 3m suit is gonna cut it :D . I'm also going to take the Nitrox course but that's a one day classroom only thing.

Good for you! I took my AOW about a month after my OW class, that was last Oct. I'm pretty much finding out that around this region going below 60' is cold anywhere. When I did my AOW deep dive at Pennyroyal the temp at 85' was about 45-48 degrees (pretty much stays that way year round), while it was 74 degrees at the surface. We did the deep & navigation dives (though, today I still couldn't navigate my way out of a paper bag if I tried), a night dive, a wreck dive on a school bus & search & recovery dive. I had a blast except for the deep dive. I had to abort the dive early due to multiple equipment issues that, in the end caused my reg to freeze up and try to cut the air off to me, causing a bit of panic on my part. I still got credit for the dive, though because I was down for a while before I had the complications. Let that in no way deter you from the enjoyment you will get by doing it. I haven't. In fact I look on the whole episode as a learning experience (positive, not negative) & I have done a couple of deep dives since (in warmer caribbean waters of course). The diver propelled vehicle part sounds like it will be a blast! I always thought those scooters were cool. I too would like to try Nitrox sometime, although I don't know when my instructor will offer it, because she says Nitrox doesn't do much for her, so she really doesn't like it & doesn't offer it very often. I'm hoping I can pick it up sometime in the next year or so. I will be doing a boat diving & peak performance buoyancy (man, do I need this on bad!) specialty classes in a couple of weeks.

Good luck! I'm also doing AOW this month along with EAN and PPB.

Thanks... LOL~~~ It freshes up my memory

Not a problem. I'm still trying to figure out all these acronyms myself.
Lol, I was lost the first time I read this site trying to figure out all the acronyms. It all starts to make sense if you put everything in context though.:D

This board has been better for my diving vocabulary than anything we did in the class.

Sorry about that! Correct ... Peak Performance Buoyancy. And I sure have high hopes for the class. I'm still trying to tackle the incidious buoyancy beast. But then, I have a total of 10 logged dives and I hear it takes time, practice and experience. Anyway, the course certainly can't hurt.

You're not the only one! My first dive of the season was terrible. I had to wear my 6.5mm suit & used 24# weight. I couldn't even begin to descend. I added a couple more pounds & then could descend with some difficulty. Towards the end of the dive I had a lot of trouble staying down for the safety stop. Even a couple of weeks ago at Falling Rock, wearing the same suit, I got a little too shallow checking out the sail boat & popped up to the surface. I was able to get back down & finish the dive without too much trouble. It will be nice when things warm up to the point that wetsuits won't be needed. I am basically needing to learn how to properly weight myself, in stead of guessing (which is usually wrong). I am going on a live abard this summer & want to enjoy it without worrying about damaging the environment.
