I have been promising myself for years to do my open water certification. last week out of the blue i booked and paid for one. Tomorrow i will be off to sodwana bay for the week to do it. Im quite nervous because i think i may be too old (45) and fat for this. do you think 45 is too old to do this?

I have been on numerous liveaboard trips around the world but always as a snorkeler
now i wont have to feel left out! :eyebrow:

its a good thing im not married or my wife would be accusing me of having a midlife crisis. I assure you, there is no crisis, just midlife. and middle age spread. :11:

Hi, and why not indeed. I certified in the whitsunday islands the ripe old age of 44 in April this year, and the wife who is a few years behind..Must be a mid life crisis :eyebrow: and a trend to grow old disgracefully.. Realise i should have done this years ago.

However for the weight not sure, assume you will have a dive medical ?? (compulsory in OZ before starting a course), if not might be worth getting yourself checked out as a precaution...

Good luck

Cheers

Jim

I did it about a month from my 45th birthday. Got checked out by my doctor first (which was required here, as well, but due to blood pressure not age) but have had no problems. That was May '04, so I haven't been doing it long. But loving every minute of it!

(except maybe hauling the gear to the dive site. ;-)

Of course you're not too old!! You're never too old for anything if you want to do it.

As for the weight thing, the fitter you are, the better it is for diving as you have more stamina and will have better air consumption (all other things being equal). So maybe diving will help motivate you to improve your fitness.

Let us know how it goes.

I guarantee you'll wish you'd done it years ago!!

I was 53 when I started - no problem. The younger divers look at me funny when I obard a boat, but - they end up accepting my help anyway. :D

Fat? Look at NetDoc's profile. If you're bigger than our fearless leader, you'll need to shape up. :lol2:

My oldest student was 70+, I have a very good friend who is 60 and she dives more than most anyone I know (easily 200+ dives/year). Her husband is 70 and does over 100 /year. Welcome to the board and diving. What nobody has come out and said and should be addressed is the weight issue and diving, it's a very bad mix. Heart atttacks are becoming an accident statistic in diving. Use your new found love for diving as a motivator to get into good cardiovascular condition. A light exercise program and a good diet should go a long ways.-M

On one of my trips there was a father/son duo that was diving with us. The older guy served in WWII. He didn't dive aggressively, just smart.

I haven't seen that family in years, I wonder if the old guy is still with us???
