So I'm starting into deco diving and want to go to doubles at the same time. I don't want all that weight on my back so would like to do sidemount.

I'm 6' 1", 235 lbs are HP80's or LP80's a better choice (I already have a pair of HP120's for backmount singles diving).

I understand all of this is a very personal choice, and damn those short HP80's look cute. Would I be better served with LP80, HP80 or slinging those big HP120's ??

Thanks!

They seem small if you're going to use them for deco dives. If you're someplace you can get cave fills, you can get a good amount of gas in LP85s, and the Fabers are only 7" in diameter.

HP 80s are both small and short. LP85s on the other hand are very sweet sidemount tanks, if you can get a cave fill.

If you can't get a cave fill then keep it light with X7-100s, or go larger with X8-130s.

Just for info, I use 2hp 120's for sidemount, cold water. Yes, they are a little different to man handle, but they work just fine.

I dive LP 85s (actually European tanks but I think the size is comparable). They're a decent size for most jobs: however, I think 100s or 120s might be a better fit for you. With SM one has MUCH more flexibility with sizing (than BM) but I think you'd be better off with a slightly larger volume cylinder... have fun!

As mentioned, the HP80s are not a great choice. They are ok as singles but not very good doubled up or as SM tanks because they are so short and stubby.
I've used the LP85s in the past and they are a little bit longer so work pretty well.

What type of diving are you planning on doing in SM? I'd pick the tanks based on the objective since certain tanks will work better than others.

Are you diving dry or wet? If dry, you should consider bigger tanks. 80s will likely require you to carry additional weight to remain neutral at the end of the dive. Worthington 85s make a great cylinder for sidemount in a dry suit for someone your size. Faber 95s are also okay although you might also need some additional weight with those. If you're diving wet then you might want to stay with Fabers as they are a little lighter. How much weight do you currently use with the 120? What brand 120? Salt or fresh water?
