Hello Everyone!

I am hoping to get some advice on choosing a resort destination in Roatan. I am going alone as all my dive buddies are not available.

I have taken a look at a couple of places that seem to fit my needs but interested to see if any of you have some advice. The two resorts in question are:

Fosters at West Bay
Los Rocas

Accomodations seem to be ok, but interested in what anyone else thinks.

How close are they to the West End?
How is the dive outfits they are associated with?
How is the weather in May?
Anything I should watch out for?

That is all to start, but I am sure I will have more questions.

Thanks!

NHDiver25,

I stayed at two locations in West End village rather than at resort. There are some nice B&B's and other areas that are affordable and nice. I cannot remember the name at this point but will check my stack of business cards when I get a chance. As far as a dive shop, I did a great deal of training and subsequent diving with Coconut Tree Divers located right in the center of town. They were a really great dive operation that I will recommend without reservation. At first glance they seem a very laid back operation, but their instructors and dive masters were knowledgeable, had substantial experience and the entire operation was very serious about safety, while still making the diving a really great time. I am a pilot, member of the National Ski Patrol and also a member of the Search and Rescue her in Alaska, so safety and professionalism are extremely important to me. We dove with Coconut Tree for 3 weeks, and I return to their operation when ever I go to Roatan.

Have a great trip. It is a great destination.

We've been twice so far and are also going again in May. We stayed at Bananarama Beach Resort and dove with their shop both times. The "hotel" is basic but clean and cheap. The dive op is among the best we've used. Very professional and a pleasure to deal with.
I'll be glad to provide more info.....

You might want to check out Guava Grove. You can search them on google and they will come up. Run by dive professionals, the property has ammenties and it is very affordable, clean and all rooms have kitchenettes.

I have stayed at Foster's twice in the last 3 years. Great people! Foster (owner) conducts business from his hammock in the shade. My dive buddy and I are going back in June, diving with Anemona Divers, which used to be Octopus Dive Shop. Don't know much about the new owners, but if Foster leases to them they must be OK. All of Foster's cottages, duplexes, except for the small hotel type rooms, are right on the beach, a stone's throw to Anemona Divers. Las Rocas is a bigger dive shop with a small restaurant and cabins, nice place. It's a fairly long walk around the shore to West End. My wife did it but took a water taxi back! Water taxi's stop running at dark, so take a land taxi after that. Water and elec. go out sporadically, but oh well, go to the beach or bar or go diving! (Oh yeah, be sure and have one of Foster's sons, they pick you up at the airport, stop at a store and stock up on drinks and stuff. No real store at West Bay. Several in West End. They only true season there are the rainy season and the not rainy season! It's the tropics, have fun!

I can vouche for Anemone. Sarah and Maripaz are excellent ayt finding cool stuff. Small boat = small dive group. Heading down 4/10. Can't wait.

Las Rocas is very nice, and has a generator so when the power goes out you still have water etc, which is pretty important.

Sure, some places have generators. I have one when really needed but for back up water supply I try to be more environmentally friendly than a generator ..

How cool is that? :lotsalove:

MY husband and I just dove with them last week (we dove with them in Nov 08 as well). Fosters is a dump - we rented a condo just by Las Rocas - full kitchen, etc.
Tropical Island Villa West Bay Beach.

Anemona is smaller - great professionals & service and they really love diving.
