I'm assuming you mean instead of a dive computer, as you will still need a computer to edit your footage. 
When they first came out, I thought they were just toys with somewhat poor image quality. Recently, on a trip to the Bahamas, I was impressed with footage shot with the Hero3 and am considering getting one as a backup.
