Hi guys, currently im on MAbul island in Malaysia doing sipadan island but looking to head to the Gili islands to continue my trip. The people im meeting are not a dive group but one or two of my friends there are keen for a day or two of diving.Just wondering how people rate the Gili's for their diving, if anyone recommends any spots there or who to go with? Ive got about 50 dives to my name so not worried about open water or anything. Just hoping for some colourful dives (reef > muck is my favorite)thanks very much!Nesh

I found the diving off Bali much better than it is at the Gilis.

I have to agree that I wasn't too impressed with the diving from the Gilis.

Gilli islands are beautiful, and the diving is a mixed bag! Some macro, some small sharks, trade off for good parties on trawangan! Diving in Bali is better, Nusa lembongan and penida and tulumben I can recommend. However i went in mola mola season! Have heard south Lombok has decent sites for hammerheads but not sure on current time of year! Think it's later in year?

Best season for hammerheads & diving the Magnet seems to be september / october.

Never been there (I will ...), but not surprised with the timing : september / october correspond to massive sharks migration in the Lombok Strait & shark fishing season in North East Nusa Penida.

The Gili Islands dont have only turtles. There are a lot around but there are also the sharks, bumpheads parrot fish, trevallies, snappers, even the Gilis have muck dive sites and better ones than Bali. The Gilis dont have the Mola Mola, the same amount of mantas, but a the dive sites are a boat ride, max 30min away, from the dive shop.

if you are a macro lover there are sites where u can find seahorses, pygmees, pipefish (ornate ghost, dubble ended, banded, slender, robust), frogfish, stonefish, harlequin shrimps, nudis, mimic octopus, blue ringed octopus, wonderpus.
mosty the diveshops are not going to these divesites cuz the main custumor is student, thats the main difference with bali.
for a customer you have to think what kind of diveshop u lije, cuz on trawangan there are 22. little ones and big ones. it is to easy to say that the gilis are not beautiful.

I thought the gillis were beautiful. I thought the beaches were lovely with amazing snorkelling right off the beach where I saw many turtles and a massive group of bump headed parrot fish. I thought gilli air was the best and most beautiful, and probably in beauty is comparable to lembongan, the beaches are certainly much better on gillis. The macro I agree is going to be there, and it's the only place I have seen a lurid purple coloured frogfish. No sharks at shark point though!! If you want decent diving and party like atmosphere then I would defo recommend it.
