What thickness wetsuit for summer and early fall diving? These things are expensive and am worried a 7mm semi dry may be too warm in some months. I also want to get a wetsuit that can accommodate most Ohio quarry diving and then maybe consider getting a thinner one. What do you guys recommend? I am considering a SP Novascotia 7.5mm semi dry. Is that too much?

I dont like cold and I run a little warm naturally. For example I dove Aruba in March in a 3mm shortie. I probably could have wore a 3mm full. It was ever so slightly chilly at 40ft but still manageable. Hot as hell on the boat obviously.

Are you just planning on quarry diving, or do you plan to dive the Great Lakes shipwrecks as well? If you want to get into the wrecks, I wouldn't spend on a fancy semi-dry because you're ultimately going to want a full on drysuit. That $900 for a semi-dry is a nice down payment.

Probably wont ever dive the lakes.

I dive a 5mm farmer john with a 5mm jacket [10mm over body core]. Good enough to take me from May - October and depths down to 80 ft at Gilboa. Deeper or Nov - Apr is dry-suit time. WS is not as severe as Gilboa during wet-suit months, but for economic reasons I use same setup for diving.

When you get to the tubes at Gilboa [60 ft], the water is always south of 50 degrees. Deep Gilboa is Great Lakes temps.

7mil semi dry is what I used for all quarries and great lakes. I am a bit cold tolerant, so I was never cold.

How long do you want to be in the water? And, how many times in a day/trip?

Im also only open water certified currently so I wont be spending much time below the thermocline.

Gilboa can have three or four thermoclines during the summer months. Surface to 15 feet may be low 70s, 15 to 28 ft mid to low 60s, 28 to 40 ft mid 50s, 40 to 60 ft low 50s to high 40s, below 55 ft low 40s to high 30s.
