We snuck in an afternoon dive at Hermosa Artificial Reef yesterday with plans of GSBs and Broomtail groupers posing for us. The silt storm underwater changed all that.
As we descended to the Fish Bowl a large Giant Sea Bass swept past me before I could even lift my camera. There were two in the bowl but we couldn't see them unless we were within two feet. The GSBs at Hermosa Reef are more diver-friendly than the Catalina variety. Not only do they allow you to get close but they will often swim right up to your camera, perhaps checking out their reflection in your dome port.
Powerful strobes are the only reason I am able to post any photos. With silt filling the water and very dark conditions on the reef you could only see shadows without them.
I floated twenty feet over the bowl waiting for a sea bass to pull into their rest stop. I saw a total of four but one in particular seemed to like being near us.
