Just a very short vid of a Giant Sea Bass I spotted hovering at 75ft at the edge of the kelp beds at Casino Point. I have seen loads of them before but this guy was the biggest I have seen in my mind easily 3-400 pounds. I was so excited to get this close I could not get my camera white balance set or keep it steady. Pity about the extensive wounds on his back from a boat I would guess. Enjoy.

Nice video!

Nice video... same one I was filming last week. Sad to see the extensive damage from a boat prop (a twin screw or did the GSB roll upon impact? Good question.). Some thought it was from a shark, but that's no shark bite. I agree on your estimate of its weight. However, wait until you see one in the 500-600 lb range! I've seen two of them.

Does anyone know whether such extensive damage will heal or whether this beautiful fish will likely die? Thanks

I'm guessing that the injuries, although extensive, will heal. When I inspected them last week none of the deep cuts penetrated the muscle layer into the body cavity. Apparently the bass has left the dive park for the time being as no one I know of has sighted it in the past few days (a number of others, but not this one). By the way, the proper common name is giant sea bass. The black sea bass is an Atlantic species.

I can't open your video for some reason.

Me, neither -- photobucket is blocked, and that is where the video is hosted.

Wow! Thanks for posting the video. I hope the GSB recovers.

Have either of you ever seen a GSB out of water? Have you ever weighed a GSB? A 100 pound one? a 200 pound one? a 300 pound one? I strongly suspect NO !

300- 400 500 and 600 pounds are exceptional GSB weights.. Next time you see a 600 pound GSB, please take a picture of two of him..

FYI the record catches are 563 pounds at Anacapa for hook and line, and 518 pounds at San Clemente for Spearfishing, which broke the previous record of 480 pounds set while diving from shore at Scotsmans Cove, now Reef point, Laguna Beach, OC.

I have personally had contact with a 345 pound GSB and can verify that is one big fish! Much much much bigger that that demonstrated in the video

So let's recognize that a 500 pound fish is very rare and a 600 pound fish is extremely rare and the fish pictured in the video was about 200 to maximumn of 250 pounds

Lets not get carried away size..even though it does matter
