What's the attraction of that route over flying Continental through HOU?

Nothing really. I was responding to the comments above concerning missing connections at IAH with Continental. I have never missed an American connection to CZM through DFW.

I've never missed one to CZM through HOU with Continental (knock wood), though the last time I had quite a run through the airport. We did miss our connection in HOU on the way back, but since I booked on line and chose my flights, I have no one to blame but myself.

The layover time of 1hr 35min after the flight from CZM to DFW is important (to me at least) as it is enough time to include delays and the movement from one DFW terminal to another.

I would pay $300.00 NOT to go through Cancun. Especially on the way home. It's just another overcrowded, big stupid cattle pen. Who needs it. Why ruin the nice Coz feeling.
But again, that's me talking.

It used to be that an hour or a little more layover on the way back in HOU was enough, but lately their have been (I surmise) some scheduling changes which make Immigration and Customs a lot more crowded when the 12:30 flight from Cozumel gets to HOU. Lesson learned; there are plenty of flights daily from HOU to AUS. Next time I'll choose the next one.

It's not a big deal. I had to do this on the fly- the airline caused me to miss my connection two different ways (long story). My choice was to spend the night in Miami or fly in Cancun, which I did. I have never done this before and only decided to do it at the gate, upon finding out that the last connection of the day was gone.
I was traveling solo- an almost 50 year old woman with dive gear, and had no difficulties. Yes, I did drag my things from the bus to the pier and got winded as I was very close to the departing time for the ferry (and did not want to wait for the next one).
I slept on the bus from Cancun to Play del Carmen - it was very comfortable and airconditioned. I also slept on the ferry over. Then took a cab from the pier to Scuba Club.
I would almost consider doing the direct flight to Cancun over one making connections. Even with and 1hr and 30 minute layover, my connection was gone.
The big suprise was that my luggage actually MADE it to Cancun
