Greetings Seth and great question with some really great answers already.
I have sensitive ears like TStorm so I have to ascend and descend in the horizontal and actually pretty slow both directions.
On the ascents I am finding myself using the 30' a minute till I get to my first scheduled stop or half depth of the dive.
At this point I slow a bit somewhere around 20-30' a minute then when I reach 20' I really slow down.
I have been padding my 20' stop this season and added a 10' for at least 2-3 min. and what I have found it a lot less ear issues and it is easier to get on the boat because everyone else is out of the way.

This is just my practice as I am preparing for Tri-Mix the addition of He to my breathing gas.
The theory of slow ascents crosses over to all diving but TSandM is right about following appropriate ascent rates till you reach the shallower depths then SLOW, SLOW, SLOW DOWN!
You are in no race to get to the surface enjoy the dive!
Make sure you have plenty of gas to do a nice slow ascent and take your time!
