1 - I've read that we'll need some kind of environmentally safe sunscreen to wear in the water. What do you use, and where do you get it? It's wintertime where I am, and sunscreen is kind of hard to come by, let alone some special kind. And is it a law to wear this kind, or just a strong recommendation?

2 - For women only - my hubby has surprised me with an appointment for my first ever bikini and Brazilian wax for our trip. The appt is scheduled for just 5 days before I plan to be in salty ocean water. Will it sting? be ouchy in the saltwater? Should I cancel the appt or keep it?

thanks for any advice.

Regarding the sunscreen, if it is true, you probably can buy it at the resort/hotel you are staying at. When I went to Cozumel back a bit back, the resort's store was well stocked with everything and anything one could need. I don't know if that has changed since.
My dive skin protected my body while in the water, the only part that needed coverage was my balding scalp.

Regarding #2, can you move the appointment up?? Or is it back??? What does a "Brazilian wax" include???? I'm scratching my bald spot. I have never heard of it before.

MikeC,

You almost had it nailed on the head, more like waxing it till it's a bald spot then scratching a bald spot, lol.

Brazilian is a term that has evolved into alot of different meanings. The most popular one is complete removal of all hair down south and in between the buns. In reality it originated as a narrow landing strip up front with the lips and the backside smooth to accomodate the very small bikini's the Brazilian girls wear. Brazilians like Europeans have a very healthy, well adjusted attitude about pleasure and the both the male and female body.

Getting most or all waxed is extremely popular these days with women and alot of guys now too who stay in shape and take care of themselves. In L.A., attractive fit women who are not epilated up to some degree down sotuh are very much the exception.

Laser is starting to take over though here in SoCal, especially the Light-Sheer diode lasers by Coherent. It's permanent.

Girl as for the wax, I get them every so often and I can tell you that anytime up to a couple of days before you leave you should be fine.

Obviously you want to wait till its close to your trip so you don't have the hair growing back too soon.

Additionally if you feel a sting it will most likely be from the hair growing back in the tender folds and areas that are not use to you shaving or waxing before. I am assuming from your post that you plan on sunning yourself in a thong?
If you are wearing a thong make sure that they wax everything down under to insure that clean look. also make sure to keep plenty of sunscreen on the skin in your pubic region. this area is very prone to sunburn and I am sure your husbands plans don't include rejection due to sunburn down under...

Most of all enjoy it, I know it always makes me feel both liberated and very sexy.

Waxing avoids shaving irritation, but depending on the toughness and elasticity of your follicle pores, it can cause ingrowns in some. Also, it does not stay as smooth or for so long as many think. The hair must be at least 1/8"" of an inch long for most thicker bodied hot wax to grab it. However as it grows back in, each hair shaft has a much smaller diameter tip from the anagen phase (growth phase), and a finer tapered tip folds back over itself and thus feels much softer. Each hair removed will send the follicle into a telogen phase, which is a resting phase, although for every visible hair, both terminal (darker heavy bodied) or vellous aka baby hair, there are 2 more under the skin either in a telogen or anagen (growth phase) commencing stage. Even though it may take a couple of months for an epilated hair shaft to reappear, there are two more that are in the process of coming in. One advantage to waxing is it tends to atrophy a follicle over time.

Laser still beats all hands down.

Julie, Dave, thank you both very much for your responses re the waxing. I think I will move the appt a little closer to our departure date, like 3 days out instead of 5, eh?

MikeC, thanks about the sunscreen too. I'm guessing we'll have to buy some at the resort. Had heard it was pretty expensive to do that, but if it's regulation for that area, I guess we have to have it. Will probably take some of my own just in case we can use it after all.

Believe me when I say there is no LAW about sunscreen in Mexico.

In fact, I'm almost pretty sure there is no LAW in Mexico, well written law anyway.

If I'm wrong, I'd sure like to know how they enforce it, you know, proper sunscreen application and all.

The last thing anybody is going to bug you about in Mexico is the kind of sunscreen you're using. More to the point, sunscreen can have a negative effect on your mask and mabye other pieces of equipment.

When I was in Cozumel, I wore the sunscreen I bought at my local store, much cheaper.

I agree though that it makes the mask slippery on your face. I put it on my nose and that's it. Avoid it on the rest of my face until I'm done diving for the day.

It's not that it makes the mask slippery, it can actually damage the material that the mask is made of.
