Get the DAN insurance

If I may ask - did you go to International Hospital first, or did you call DAN for a referral? The reason I ask is that my PCP on Cozumel manages the chamber at CostaMed, and he indicated they are the preferred DAN provider. His email is @dan.org (not @costamed.com.mx).

This is just for my curiosity - when time is of the essence, seeking out the closest source makes sense.

My wife is still in the hospital with some dizziness and chest pain. We just saw the Dr., and my wife is going back in the chamber for a Table 9 treatment.

WetInPortland: we called the DAN hotline and they did tell us to go to CostaMed. We grabbed a taxi from Sabor but of course there was a traffic jam and my wife was really hurting... then I remembered there was a DAN med facility across from Aldora Divers, so I asked the driver to take us there.

We are also on the DAN Preferred Plan and I am glad to hear that they are taking good care of your wife. I have thought about taking the highest level plan but we also buy trip insurance and that includes some medical coverage.

@shadling my thoughts and prayers are with your wife and you and hope that you get good news soon. Good job on helping her get medical care fast.

I am also interested in learning more about skin bends, can you tell us about her dive profile prior to experiencing symptoms?

I have posted this story in the past, but new members join SB all the time so it doesn't hurt to repeat information about an event (not connected to me) that helped me to finally make up my mind about the wisdom of taking dive and travel insurance.

A dive shop owner named Gary McNabb had retired and closed his shop and moved to Florida. While all these changes were taking place he let his DAN insurance lapse and forgot to renew it before making a dive trip with his wife to Ambergris Caye, Belize. On one of the dives he surfaced too close to the boat and suffered a serious head injury. He was transferred to a hospital in Belize City for surgery and critical care and later transported by air to Texas where he died in a hospital.

His expenses outside the US were very great and so his friends had set up the GoFundMe page at the link below to try and help his family. I didn't know Gary McNabb but I am guessing that he wouldn't have wanted to leave behind a terrible financial burden for his family. He paid for insurance for years and probably didn't use it much, but the one time he really needed it, he didn't have it. So now I try to make sure that we always have it - but I hope that we will never need it!

Air or nitrox?

Glad to hear she is improving, but 2 Table 6 treatments and a table 9 sounds like her hit was more more than simple skin bends.

And yes, CostaMed with Dr. Dario Gomez is the official DAN Dr. on the island and is who I refer all divers to whether dive related or other medical needs.
