German scuba diver dies in Liguria - English - ANSA.it
(ANSA)- Imperia, December 9 - A German scuba diver died in the water off the Liguria town of Santo Stefano al Mare on Wednesday.
Gunter Sikora, 51, was diving with three German friends whilst on holiday in the Italian Riviera when one of the group noticed something was wrong.
Sikora was immediately brought to the surface by his friends, who called the emergency services shortly afterwards. One of the divers attempted CPR during the journey to the shore.
Medical staff were awaiting the divers' arrival at the dock but despite repeated attempts to revive Sikora, they were unable to restart his heart.
Cause of death is unknown but it is thought the diver may have suffered an embolism during his descent.

"....it is thought the diver may have suffered an embolism during his descent."

I'm trying to understand the physiology / physics of that....

Few jouralists know enough about diving to know what that's about, and ascent does sound like descent, to an untrained ear. Whether the writer even got that from a good source or not is still unknown. The word may have just mentioned in a list of possibilities?
