I use generic luggage for airplane travel. Not because I'm afraid of theft, but just because I see no reason to pay extra to have a bunch of dive equipment logos on the bag. My preferred suitcase is the relatively lightweight hardsided polypropylene F'Lite series by Samsonite.

Bingo...$50. for a regular suitcase vs. $120. for a "dive case" is a bit overkill, and not worth the risk of "Hello Dive Stuff Enclosed"..my old Samsonite works great.

I dive with a bunch of guys that use the rubber, aid tubs for local diving...never saw any on a plane? The big Pelican cases are nice, but can you keep them under 50 lbs?

I have a small black bag I use on planes, and the tub is no bigger than the crates they give you to stash your junk in on the boat. Unless the boat is REALLY small, in which case I'd rather go on another boat.

The Costco rolling duffles are really great: A ten year gaurantee. (I have switched them for new ones) About 40 dollars and a big fat card that says "TEN YEAR WARRANTEE" by Ricardo.

I buy the repacement bags first, put the worn out ones in the box and take the reciept back to Costco, no questions asked. The zippers eventually wear out.

I just like returning things in a box...

And you're in... Hawaii. Okay, very good! I don't have to worry so much about getting your worn out bag from Costco. I will, however, still make a mental note to open the box and check the bag before purchasing it....

Unless you're returning the bag on the grounds that the 10-year guarantee didn't work out, so you have that card in hand, and not pulling a sneaky and returning defective merchandise under the guise of "oh, well, I got this for my birthday but my boyfriend KNEW I wanted Barbie pink instead..."

No...it's not sneaky.

The card is huge...it says TEN Years, they last about two.

Of course I am, the boxes and reciept just show my good faith, that I wanted the bag, not just cash. I don't have a moral issue with this, asking them to stand by the guarantee. My 300 dollar Scubapro bag lasted about two years too.

I went the ebay route for a nice large dufflebag type deal with 3 wheels and handles for local diving where I get to haul all my stuff a long ways on crappy terrain.

I've yet to take my gear onto an airplane, but when I do it'll most likely be in a generic no-name suitcase and inside will be a mesh bag for hauling my gear from the hotel to the boat in.

As for locks on luggage and the security thing, you can have them, but they have to be those special airport security approved luggage locks (you can find them at walmart, master lock has a line of them)... the airport people have a special tool that opens them up without damaging them.

walmart; i found it in the automotive area, about the same size and design as a medium size plastic scuba box, without the rubber seal. $18.00 . two lathches and aplace for a tsa approv, lock. i installed two castres and a strap. any body want to buy a BODYGLOVE dive bag ?

I use a hard sided suitcase for transport and pack my mesh dive bag inside to take on the boat.

For me its now a bag every time. A suitcase is too heavy.

Most airlines here now offer 20kg (44lbs) max allowance and an empty suitcase weighs something like 4kg (9lbs). That means 25% of my luggage allowance is gone already on just the case.

Whenever i travel i have to pay excess but at roughly $9 per kg it means i can save $36 or so on the charge.

Oh, okay okay okay. I thought you were sneaking the *broken* bag back into the box and trying to return it as a *new* item they could restock and sell to some other poor sap... that's why I started my shocked laughter. While I openly encourage people to run against traffic, doing *that* would be, well, sort of arse-hatish.

Sorry, I misinterpreted. I'll work on my English skills :D

But yeah, in that sense--returning it as faulty under their guarantee, you're darn tootin', as Jerry says on Fargo--I'd do the same thing.
