Although I don't think using a ROV is going to yeild any new information, there are ROV's that use a fine fiber-optic filament which plays out off a reel (just like a primary reel) behind the ROV, and therefore line handling is not a huge issue. But, I have never seen a ROV that would fit through a 4" gap.

I wanna go up there just to watch the charlie-foxtrottery.

ROV...lawl.

No one has considered a diver with a camera...you know, with lights...and scuba tanks?

Doug - do you know how those are powered? Some tethers provide power in addition to carrying signal.

I'd wonder what the cost and availability of these are vs. one that has tether played out from the surface. Also, I'd wonder how the tether winds back up on one of these and what happens in the event that it gets caught in a line trap or something.

Good questions CD. I'm not familiar with the ROV application, but for UGVs, the fiber is laid down and not retrieved. (So you need enough for a round trip.)

I've never seen a diver fit through a 4" gap either :P

But do you think that will stop the family from requesting expensinve equipment and other divers go back there to find their son? I don't.

Why can't you pump thousands of gallons through a filter and then check the filter for human tissue? Seems if you were able to separate filtered items well it may be a good test...obviously someone would have thought of this if it was a good idea though.
