Most times thieves will steal things in front of your eyes, but you wont know it beause it's not your gear.
Having said that - I agree with you. break their arms and legs.

Reminds me of something I read in a motorbike magazine in the UK once - a group of riders were sick of their bike sbeing stolen - so they bought a decoy bike and a van. they parked the bike then they all waited inside the van for a thief to strike.

sure enough, Mr thief turns up, and before he knows what is going on, he is blindfolded and in the back of a van. He is beaten to a pulp and then thrown out. I'm pretty sure broken limbs were involved.

Sounds nasty, but I think he really deserved it. It will make him think again before stealing again...

Sorry to hear that someone took your gear. That's damn low to take your gear. Anyone lays a hand on my gears with the intention to steal is going get eaten alive.

I didn't have scuba gear stolen, But have had it happen under my nose to once. I had the boat in a marina, fishing a salmon tourney, rods in the rod holders, Tackle boxes down below. Some rotten SOB stole two rods off my boat and we were only gone for a very short time to weigh in fish. It really gives you a sick feeling when someone does that. Sorry for your loss.

I've been fortunate enough to never have anythign stolen. But these stories are depressing (especially the news from ginnie since I"ll be there in two weeks. I've always thought of Scuba Diving as a fraternity with more respect for it's members than that. A guy I dive with actually was leaving a quarry one time and his talegate from the truck came undown and he was carrying BCD's Regs etc. etc. in his truck and they spilled all over the place with coolers tents and everythign when he realized later on down the road he turned around and got all the way back to the quarry without seein ganything on the street he ran into the quarry and asked and it was all sitting there packed up. Apparently a guy ran into a group looting it on the side of the street and he said hey that gear belongs to a diver he collected it and returned it to the local quarry. How sweet is that.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned to call the police and file a report on the stolen items along with serial numbers. Most Police Depts. routinely check pawn shop records and enter stolen items in a database. Most of the time the person that stole your gear is a "known" to the local LE anyway and may very likely be caught with your gear.

LE often knows where the drug crowd disposes of stolen items or if a theft ring is operating in the area. So always call the cops and file a report hopefully along with the serial number(s) and at least you have a chance of getting your gear back.

I only ever had a primary flashlight stolen, but it was on a bus trip, and then you're with all these people you have spent time with, wondering "who stole it??" Crappy.

just thought of something - I have seen people who paddle ot to dive (complete with flag/bouy) and wondered if there is the possibility that someone steals that as you are down? That would suck...

Sorry to hear that happened to you, that bites.

At Gilboa Quarry, someone could steal my extras. I usually have an extra pair of gloves and my beanie in my bag. Or they could steal my bag. But I leave most things at home and leave money locked in the car.

That's not an invitation, btw...

The nice thing about Gilboa is Mike's insistence that everyone sign in. He basically has a record of everyone who is on the property any given day and if you notice something is stolen and let him know right away he may be able to help you get your stuff back. Gilboa is the one place I will leave my gear unattended for short periods. I've only had one thing messed with and that was a watermelon I had placed in a pillow case with a 10lb weight and taken to the tubes to cool it off. When I went back the next dive the knot had been re-tied on the rope holding the pillow case closed. When we brought it back the 10 pound weight was missing but I'm not sure if my buddy somehow dropped it out of the pillow case or if it grew legs and walked off.

We have all our stuff insured on a separate policy. Coveres everything from left to damage even while traveling. Tallying up all our gear and the cost to replace came out to about 20 grand. Can't believe we have spent that much over the years. Lot of money.
