I want to know how the gas prices are affecting divers.

Airline Gas prices or you mean for my bio-fueled Goremobile?

Considering my investment in training, equipment, love of the sport, commitment of free time, cost of eating out or even lodging the cost increase of fuel for a regional dive trip is trivial. I don't want to belittle the hardship in means for some but in the scope of diving it's not a deal breaker for me.

On the other hand we may be more likely to pack a picnic lunch and plan more seriously to make the trip multi-dive just to get the most from the investment.

Gas prices have no effect on my diving at all. The biggest change I see is in the airfares but is it really a big deal? I don't think so. Say the price of a round trip ticket to some caribbean destination goes up by $50 because of higher fuel prices. Is that going to keep me at home? No way. If things are so tight with my finances that $50 extra dollars will make me stay home or change my plans, then I probably couldn't afford to go anyway.

We've changed our trip plans twice this year. The Nassau trip was bagged because the airline tickets were way high (gas affects these), the Key West trip was bagged because of the new baggage restrictions on the airlines (didn't have those before gas went through the roof). We COULD drive to Key West for the cost we calculated for flying but it's just too far from Ohio. Looks like this is the year we may spend exploring some different parts of the Great Lakes or skip the dive vacation all together and do something that involves less hassle.

We will dive just as often...... but no big travel trips this year. We just went to Bahamas on the Nekton Rorqual, so only flights to/from Ft. Lauderdale. I think that may be our only trip out of the country this year. We will most likely head over to Calif for some diving, maybe to SE Fla or Keys or maybe NC. Our local dive spot is only 2 hr drive so we will continue to do that every month or two all year.
I really don't expect to travel to the Pacific at all for awhile due to prices. We will be sticking to US and Caribbean, but that is fine as the diving is still great, just different. :D

Where I may have made two dive trips in a year, I will make one or none. Today there isn't much price difference, but tomorrow at $5. per gal. it would. It will affect airline tickets, dive op prices, car rental prices, food prices and a hugh overall rate change.

The viewpoint I have is this is not necessary as there is plenty of oil and the Congress we have now is not interested in helping the USA's dollar becoming a better value as well not as putting up new refineries (giving permits), or using known oil wells/fields.

They (Congress) are interested in themselves not our economy. Until people finally get fed-up with those that have this attitude and vote in people that would help these situations the country will remain in the postition it's in.

Any and I repeat ANY of the choices for the US president will not do anything ( as far as I believe they can) to change our course. It will have to come from a change in Congress. A change to allow permits to drill, permits to build refineries as well as looking to change Americas needs instead of what is in their (the individual Senators & Representatives) interests.

The gas prices haven't affected this year's vacation since I booked it last year and I am using frequent flyer miles to get us to the Big Island.

For regional dive travel the cost of gas just gets factored into the total cost. We only eat out one night at a regular restaurant, pack own lunches and eat dinner at a fast food place the other night.

The hotel I booked on Hotwire for the regional dive travel provides complimentary breakfast.

Maybe the higher prices will finally get the politicians to allocate time to get a comprehensive energy policy that accomplishes something before getting back to the all-important partisan bickering.

I'm committed to dive but I'm staying local for the most part for awhile 'till things settle down a bit, if they do anytime soon. But I doubt it will be soon. Not with our current corrupt government ruining this country and the economy. Way too many people in power, the top few percent, the large corporations, running this country into the ground. I'm diving in Canada and up in Cape Ann this year. Maybe a trip to warm water late in the summer depending on how airline prices are by then. From what I hear a lot of divers I know are restricting travel, even folks with lots of coin. No one wants to get gouged. With the economy the way it is EVERYTHING is going up. This will impact all businesses. They have to raise prices to offset fuel, heating (if in colder climates), higher taxes etc. Couple that with tight consumer spending, man I feel sorry the small dive ops/shops. Viscious circle.
