Gotta disagree. Blue Lagoon does have decent viz, but not good enough to justify driving from Galveston to Huntsville. Also, there's a good chance that by that time of year BL won't be open mid-week.
Mammoth Lake is only an hour's drive from Galveston and has an impressive amount of things underwater to check out. Keep your expectations viz-wise low and you'll have a great time.
Like others said, the odds of getting out in the Gulf mid-week are slim to none, and Slim left town.
