I've logged only 6 dives between Pelham and Vortex. I'm looking for something a little closer so I can dive more often and gain some experience.

Any suggestions?

And...gasp...you can even dive Lake Lanier!!! We are having a get together next weekend (12th) at West Bank Park (400 N to Exit 14, get in the left lane, after the shopping center on the left, turn left on Sanders Road, about a half mile or so, turnrRight on Buford Dam Road, go about 2 miles you will find us in the first cove on the right as you enter the park. It costs 4 dollars to get in.

From DIVE PROF today:

Lake Jocassee 7/3/09
Great group of folks on this trip. Beautiful day. The conditions were excellent - the best I've see for Lake Jocassee lately. we dove 32%mix and all dives were to about 100'. We had at least 18- 20' vis in the shallows, 40'+ at depth. We began with the shore dive on the boat ramp (bones family, ski boat, airplane wing, the trees (saw several cats sitting on tree limbs- they were not bothered by us at all). Then it was on to the 50 wall (large school of sunfish) and then up to the boulders for the safety stop - huge bass, several more cats, crappie etc. 81 min dive. We dropped off tanks and had lunch. The Market - great food with outdoor shaded dining. I recommend the cranberry, pecan chicken salad on the crossant. By the time we returned we were told that Bill was back in a little early (Bill - "Off the Wall Dive Charters" - best on Jocassee) and that we could go directly to the boat. We dove the wall/junk/other stuff for the first dive. You could see the entire Junk at once and you could see the edge of the wall standing on the back of the junk. Wall was great. Second dive was Crackin's Beach. This was an awesome dive - great vis and many trophy size bass, sometimes several at once). The bass were not intimidate by us and would let us get within a foot or two. There was one bass that was as big as my leg. Saw several cats and other fish as well. Bottom time was 60 min each dive. Great day of diving with good friends! Gosh, is this fresh water diving?

During my certification I was surprised at how few mentions Lanier got. What is there to see? How is visibility? Temperature? Is it good for a newbie? I need to start diving lakes regardless because although I want to dive for recreation my ultimate goal is to be able to do underwater recovery as it relates to my career. Thanks for the info

Jocassee was great yesterday. Our local lake (Clark Hill/Lake Thurmond) has had vis challenges lately but it seems to be clearing (I'll know more tomorrow). We have a large gaggle hitting the lake at 1pm (could be that a bunch of divers are a school, herd, or flock I guess, I like the idea of a gaggle:D). We are a friendly folk who extend kindness to new divers. You can dive on a Mitsubishi MU2 (do google search for photo) , ski boat and bouyancy course in 35' of water at East dam.

Hey Evad, things seem to be clearing up a bit from all the rain/lake rise. I'll give you a shout when the river is clear. When it is nice we get 15' vis and 2 hours of history on a dive.

Thanks,...........what river?

The Savannah River. There is a nice 1-2 hour drift dive (only 21' deep max) from the 5th st. Marina to the Boathouse. A shipwreck in 18', the remains of the Hamburg cotton docks, remains of the old Hamburg Bridge. Lots of fish. Vis in the late summer sometimes approaches 15'+ when there has been no rain.

Two dives in the lake (Lake Thurmond/Clark Hill) today. Vis is 8' on the rocks and maybe 10' on the plane. No vis to speak of at depth yet. Hope it clears soon.

What about diving in Macon area? I am moving there (robins) in October and want to continue my diving. I am tech (NAUI Trimix II/advanced nitrox/deco/etc) but love all diving.

I know I am spoiled coming from Hawaii where I can dive all day, any day, and am always withing 5 minutes of any number of dive sites. Looking forward to experiencing lake/quarry/river diving. Also, plan to hit the atlantic coast as well as Florida coast. I am, however, looking for dive sites that are closer so that I can partake in the trades more often than just occansionally.

Plan on getting drysuit there to start learning how that strange mystical world works.
