Hi - New to the forum. Over the past few years, I've been using an old Canon A70 to take pictures while snorkeling, mostly in the Caribbean. It works fine, but has some disadvantages, particulalry the shutter lag. Decided to upgrade, and stay with Canon since I like their products. Narrowed it down to the G7 or SD850 - I know there are later models available, but I can get either of these thru a rewards program, so they would be free - quite an advantage I think. Anyway, wondered if anyone could provide any advice. Thanks

G7, no contest.

Love the SD range as a go anywhere camera, but not for underwater. They have no manual controls and I consider these essential if you want to do more underwater than snap - and you likely will in the near future. You'll also find that manual controls allow you to tweak while you're underwater so you'll get images that you otherwise would have missed or been dreadfully disappointed with.

So I decided on the G7. Sent to the rewards program, and imagine my delight when I received the cameraa and it was a G9. Apparently they just hadnt updated their online catalog. Anyway, going to St John in a few weeks, so I'll have the opportunity to try it underwater. Thanks for the advice

Wow, that's great colinm85! I absolutely love my G9. Have you decided on which housing you will get for it?

How does it work? I also want to find a camera for photography. the G9 and S5 caught my eyes, and the lowest price of G9 I can find is $430 at a deal site
How do you think of? Can I get a cheaper one?

You can get a G7 thats the predecessor of the G9 for some less than the G7 would cost I guess..
