I needed to get one of my tanks hydro'd and I thought I would see if I could go direct and not go through one of my LDS's to save a few bucks as well as little time.

After a long Internet search I came across Pressure Vessel Testing in Roseville, MI - not far from my house. When I went to drive there, I found out this is actually Bruno's Dive Shop. I did not realize they did there own hydro testing. While I have never been a Bruno's customer even though they are so near my house, I thought I would give them a try, especially since I had 10% off coupon (which turns out was from an old website - but they honored it anyway). You really can't beat 25$ hydro's.

All in all they were quite friendly and Bruno went out of his way to introduce himself. Total cost for a hydro, VIP and 32% Nitrox fill for a steel 95 = 45$ and they completed this is 4 days.

Just another option for all you Detroit area divers.

FYI..... I found out last year that the place I get my fire extinguishers serviced (for work) also started offering hydro and VIS checks. When I was in getting some of my extinguishers serviced, I noticed a placard on the wall that said they now offer those services for scuba tanks. I inquired and found out that they would do a hydro AND a VIS check for $20! However, they don't do air fills, but a hydro and a vis for 20 bucks. Can't beat it. Check it out. Maybe your local fire extinguisher shop will do it for a similar price.

I do the same at a place called All Safe here in Minnesota for $20. I figure, why pay the LDS $30 and have to wait an extra week until they get enough tanks to make a trip. The LDS charges $15 for a VIS alone which takes them about 1 minute max. If you can't find one on your own, ask a fire station where they get their SCBA tanks hydro'ed.

Since we do not hydro tanks in house I can't comment on the time but in the defense of our LDS if you get a tank in for hydro before thursday we can have it to you the following Thursday and although we are not as inexpensive as the hydro shops if you a diver who usually finds out at the last minute that your tanks can't be filled we include a free rental for the time your tank is out for hydro so you can get out and dive. I know that this year alone we have given out 23 free rentals in Ann Arbor and at the Quarry to people who wanted to dive but were out of Hydro. In most cases it is worth it to know that we do this.

Thanks for the useful post

I made the original post to give the local DTW divers some info. I was surprised how difficult is was to find a source to do hydros (other than through a LDS) on the Internet. I think a person could most likely find plans build rebuild the Pentagon easier then finding out about hydros sources.

Previously I had always gone through a local LDS to get my hydros - I deal with a a couple of shops here in Detroit and a few more in Key Largo. Funny, but in Detroit I nearly always get my annual VIS work done at the store that I bought the tanks. I don't know why, but mostly out of loyalty I guess. As I have more than few regs I of different brands I just get the tanks taken care of when I am get my regs serviced.

The steel 95 that I took to Bruno's was one a tank I send up from Florida. I have 4 other tanks down there, so I decided to send this 95 up, so I would have a two single 95's as well a my new double steel HP 100's to dive with.

Now what one diver -(OK my son and my wife dive warm water occasionally) needs so many tanks for, I just can't say. My current fleet includes: 2- 95's, 2 - 3342 PSI HP 100's (doubled), 4 - alu 80's (I need to sell these tanks as I rarely use them), 2 - 3180 PSI 100's.

Supporting your local dive shop(s) is quite important and I did not want to imply that there was some huge benefit in getting your Hydros directly.

For those downriver I got my hydro done this past spring where the ambulance company I work for gets our tanks done. I got three tanks hydro'd for $20 bucks, total, so about $6.70 each. Figured I couldn't beat that. Had the tanks back two days later.

The place is Elden Industries (Home Page) if anyone is in the Taylor area and needs a hydro.
