I took my Mod 1 class last year. Here's what I had.
$6500 - Used Revo III micro, ready to dive and one set of 3L cylinders
$630 - Second set of 3L cylinders
$330 - AL72 bailout cylinder + rigging kit
$285 - AL40 bailout cylinder + rigging kit
$2300 - training costs
$2500 - flights/lodging for training (the instructor I wanted to work with, Mel Clark, operates out of FL and I live in MN)

With that I'm a little over $12.5k not including sorb, and other random bits I had to buy.

Your in the survived mel clark support group as well?

I got mine new and I'm about 15k total.

It’s not about the money per se, it’s about being able to do the diving.

6 years ago a dive boat was doing a trip where they left from one port to another port for a couple of nights and back to the first (i.e. 3 days). Dives were in the 50m/165ft to 60m/200ft range. I was diving OC so brought two twinsets with 21/35 and 4 Ali80s with deco gas. That was for two days of diving only. The gas bill then was £200/$€260 plus the boat fees. Carrying them all back to the car was horrendous. Knowing that all the others diving rebreathers were paying literally nothing for their gas and had no issues with three days of diving was very annoying.

This week am away on a dive trip diving HMS wrecks in the 60m range, my gas bill for the week will be less than a meal out even though I’m diving their banked 12/55. Also on this trip are two open circuit divers. Very rare indeed. They’re diving on banked 21/19 and their bills will be horrendous along with their narcosis,

The weather has been very variable this week and it could have ended up as a shallow scenic dive. Not a problem for the rebreather people using £5/$€6 of gas, but not an option on OC at $$$$’s.

CC rebreathers are expensive to buy and train upon. Once that fixed cost is absorbed it’s cheap to run, requiring a couple of cells a year plus Sofnolime.

Bottom line, if you want to dive the interesting stuff then you need a rebreather. For goodness sake it’s like comparing a bicycle to a motorbike.

Emerging from the torpedo room of a U-boat in Malin Head at 70m/230ft. No bubbles and didn’t get a $2000 gas bill (was less than $100 for the week)

Yes it’s worth it!

Just finished catching up on this thread. Interesting points made me think of a discussion to be had.

What is the path to become a rebreather diver?
Costs, training, time, maintenance, how to pick a unit?

I have one group together for
Future of Open Circuit Mixed Gas and Rebreather Diving

It would be great to get a few groups to gain different perspectives on either discussion. Please let me know if you would like to participate.

Just finished up the article. Thank you for the link. Some great points to bring up during the discussion.

Lol, indeed I did. I think she's a great instructor so I'm going back for more. Doing Mod 2 next June. 😁

Do we get a medallion for each class of hers we survive? 😉

You'll have to ask her about that.

Not sure when I'll do mod 2 yet.
