We are going to wait till warm weather & water are avalible. She wants to try it, maybe FL or AL coastline.

And she want to SEE something, not just a rockquary bottom.

Oh, Happy new year.

I'm not really overweight but I do have much larger than normal...umm...natural boyancy compensators. I have the Diva and I love it.
As far as her being embarrased, what I have witnessed is that divers come in all shapes and sizes, what is really important is your skill as a diver. She should feel just fine in the diving community.

Hi there,

Any one have advice? I am short 5ft. 3 inches ( on a good day) and very round. It seems that all the bigger wetsuits are so LONG! I really can't afford custom (I'm a newbie), but need something....

thanks

hi, im5ft4 & have the same trouble, wish I could find something quick ,leaving to cozumel soon .anyone?

Hi Sher, I am even smaller than you (under 5 ft) and quite "well endowed" above and below the waist. I have been wearing an o'neil 3 mm size 8 3/4 so far, and just bought another o'neil 3 mm full suit size 6. It is a little baggy around the shins, but actually fits very well otherwise. With your extra inches of height, that would actually fit you quite well. Have you looked at that brand? Another that I looked at was body glove, but chose the O'neil over that for better fit for me.

Good luck, and see you in Cozumel!

A Big AMEN on that carebear!! :bandsmlz:

GLAD you brought backplates up ... I didn't know til now that they were so flexible when it comes to size.
I'm going to keep my eyes open to see someone who dives with a backplate. Maybe rent one and try it out.

Just a friendly reminder - a backplate will always fit her, whether she's a size 18 or a size 0.

:)

To those who think they can't afford a custom suit I think a little shopping around either on line or through the shops will show they are not that much more than a good rack suit.

If all else fails it's not hard to "tailor" a wetsuit of opportunity. Materials needed are a steady hand, a box of sharp razor blades and some neoprene cement. A bit of acetone or mineral apirits to clean the joints helps too, but is not necessary if you are gluing fresh cuts. Stitching is optional if you use a taped joint. Start with a suit with a central tube and leg tubes big enough to fit. Cut down arm and leg length to suit. Material removed can be used to make darts to help the fit your thoractic buoyancy reserves and insert panels to provide extra room for the hips.

I've done this several times. Sometimes it's not as pretty as you'd like in an ideal "unlimited funds" world, but it's cheap and warm. ;) Used wetsuits are often avialable at diver's swap meets and in want-ads. I've even seen a few on e-bay. BTW heavier suits glue up easier than the thinner ones.
