Well if I can't see it I suppose it will be one less thing to bother me. Does the vis. stratify as well like it might be good above or below the thermocline? Or if the vis. is crappy is it crappy everywhere?

At Wetherill the vis is always crappy. I've yet to dive it when it's >10ft, and is usually around 5-7. That said, a couple of weeks ago visibility was better below 40ft or so, by maybe 5ft (still around 10ft total vis, even at depth). Shouldn't be a factor for a snorkeler, though. Enjoy the warm water while you can!

Ok ok, I'll get a dry suit! I heard the vis. gets better as the phytoplankton die off?

If you want to REALLY experience a thermocline,, try the quarry in Portland.
70+ at the surface, 15', upper 40's, below that it heads down to the upper 30's. I do it in a wetsuit, but it IS a wakeup!

I definately want to try the quarry in Portland :D but not because I have any fondness of rough thermoclines :yuck:

In lakes and ponds it is surely a stratification with layers. On shore dives it often feels more like a vertical wall where the tidal water meets the "ocean". I relalize true thermoclines will also be encountered but the first abrupt chage often seems more like a wall to me.

The quarry dive is invigerating as Dave says. Just an experience I'm glad I did and hope to do again.

"Invigorating" now there's a creative way to describe thermoclines ;)
I prefer :yuck: as a descriptor for cold water

Actually a nice cold water dive cures the blah's big time :)

I'd rather feel blah than be extremely cold ;)
