as a coach and a diver constantly trying to improve on skills, i find the most effective learning tool is a video camera. i try to imitate people i mentor. i also have someone video my motions. i actually even did it this past weekend while scootering to be certain of my position in the water to insure my hole in the water column was as small as possible. the point im trying to make is that videoing myself helps me to see what i AM doing as opposed to what im trying to do.

a shop that RJP (above) staffs at offers a finning clinique that is pretty effective for just this.

put a good instructor and a video of yourself together and it'll be tough for you to "go wrong"

also as far as fins, theres nothing WRONG with split fins, but i have found tremendous success with turtles and jets for torque feedback when attempting various finning skills. i also found that trying to reverse fin in a more "flimsy" fin (as well as a split fin) was more difficult for me (not to say this is factual for everyone but it was for me)

In the Keys this weekend plan on working on the tips you all gave me. Made a mental note of the video and hopefully I can get it. Don't have access to my original OW instructor who is fantastic at the frog kick. Like the video idea too.

Back from the Keys. Had my son video me. I am half way there. The video is great feedback, thanks Ronzo the Great. Just need more practice. Sounds like a good excuse for another trip.

Try this experiment. Split fins for whip and helicopter. Then place a piece of duct tape on the fin eliminating the split. You may be surprised at the difference.
