If allowed to, they can get that big, what is throwing me off is the markings. If you type in Southern Mole Cricket in google, the markings don't exactly match up.
 
It is a dragonfly nymph and they are quite tasty sauteed with butter.:D

oh, wow. great. Is that a juvenile stage?

His behavior was very strange, kinda frog kicked like a water bug but then acted quite dead around the kids.
 
Dragonfly nymph. Note that this critter has an extendable mandible folded under his head. It was the idea for Alien, they are fearsome predators, they will catch minnows, tadpoles, anything up to three times their size. Can bite the livin' **** out of you.
