This is why this philosophy is so salient. Your surface is your team mate, rather than bolting to the surface. I am practicing the same scenario right now. Have you considered crimping your hose next time and shutting down the offending post?
 
I was on a single tank, so I thought it would be best to default to my buddy. I agree with you though. Bolting to the surface for any reason is usually a bad idea and should be reserved for last chance scenarios.
