Just in case there's still any other questions on that- you always spit the snorkel because it's easy access for water to get in your airway in the event you had an issue underwater (a near blackout for example.) We are just cautious and spit it out to create another barrier for the water.

If you're still having problems equalizing let me know- you may be using the wrong equalization technique-- it's very common and pretty easy to fix.
 
You want to make sure you're doing Frenzel and not Valsalva. Valsalva makes it pretty much impossible to equalize past about 15 feet when freediving. To check and see which you're doing put one hand on your stomach and one on your nose to pinch it, then equalize. If you feel your stomach move (or tense) you're probably doing Valsalva. Now put that hand on your throat and equaliza while pinching the nose w/ the other hand. If you feel the throat move you're probably doing Frenzel. Frenzel uses only the throat muscles to push air into the sinuses and ears whereas Valsalva utilizes large muscles, like the stomach, making it much less efficient and ineffective.
