I'm hitting the road (airways, actually?) and coming down to the Manhattan Beach REI in late September to teach the REEF Fish/Inverts/Algae ID classes - FREE! These are a fun way to not only learn what critters you're seeing on your dives, but to get involved with a popular worldwide citizen science monitoring program that you can participate in on any recreational dive, at any site, anytime. (and no cost to get involved) :D

Thursday, Sept 24th - Intro to SoCal Fish ID 5pm
Friday, Sept 25th - Intro to SoCal Inverts/Algae 5pm
Saturday, Sept 26th - Practice survey dive TBA
Classes are about 4 hours and fun!

California Fish ID and Invertebrate ID classes

If nothing else, come and heckle this Pacific NW gal from the peanut gallery :) I need hecklers! :dork2:

And after the classes are over? I'm heading to Catalina for a week to see how my drysuit works in 60 degree water...I think it will faint from the temp diff...it's used to 45-50 degree water.

Of course I think you should be using my Fish ID/Naturalist DVD!

With your blessing, I'll use it before class and during breaks, with a shameless plug for it at some point. :D

I like to have something going on the screen when we have 'downtime' in class. It sounds perfect and I look forward to getting my copy in the mail any second now!

BTW, I called ScubaLuv today and booked boat dives for W and Th of that week (and hopefully M and T). Are you in? They said a batch of German divers are gonna be on the boat those days.

Janna,
Eric @ GLACD contacted me about REEF coming to Long Point (Old Marineland) for your check out dives. Great idea! Sept is one of the best months here. The 120 Reef is abundant and has a good variety of near shore species. Entry and exits are EZ if the surf is down. Let me know if I can help.

Janna... it should arrive soon, I mailed it yesterday.

I plan to be here on the island then unless something unforeseen happens.

SWEET! Yeah, they seemed to be talking about that site as well as Malaga Cove for the practice dives - not sure at this point which one they landed on, so stay tuned...

And if any of you have ways to spread the word about the classes, ya just can't beat the price. And word is, M&M's are involved somehow....:eyebrow:

Thanks so much for offering this! I plan to join....I will probably have to leave work a little early, but I think it's a sacrifice I can make for something like this.

I may not be able to make the dive on Saturday as I was hoping to hop on a boat that day....but if it doesn't work out (the boat plan), I will plan to join....Marineland is a fantastic site for critter spotting!

Yahoo! Getting some signups from you guys, this is great!

Eric of GLACD has decided on Malaga Cove as the practice dive site/BBQ for Saturday. Entry/exit are a little easier there I guess. Not quite as far of a hike to the water either.

You are welcome to sign up for one or both of the classes, and/or the Dives-BBQ. Whatever you're interested in and available to attend is great. These are definitely worth leaving work early for, and you'll learn a lot as well as have a great time! NOT a boring lecture, I promise you!

On Saturday, we'll meet at 8:30am, do a dive or two, then have a great BBQ with free food, prizes, fun, etc.

OK, I will be there.:D

Malaga Cove is a good choice. Old Marineland (Terreana Resort) is a terrific dive, but is IMHO on the advance side due to currents, rocky entry and exit and long walk there and back (Malaga is not much better on the walk).
