I remember the airfare being high last time I was there in 2013 but now $1,040 RT from NY United and $1,200 Delta 6 months out and 90% of the seats are available based on the seating chart. I can fly to Europe for less and anywhere in the Caribbean is half the price for the same period. The cost of diving will make up for it but is there any specific reason why the fares are so high? Included taxes or something like that?

LDS I teach out of has Buddy dive April 28, includes airfare hotel unlimited shore dives 9 boat dives nitrox breakfast rental truck..store manager putting this together tells me cost will be at or under $2000. Out of Newark. Looks like we got airfare around $600 ish. Will keep eye on this posting.

Another thread discusses that points to get airfare to Bonaire MORE than doubled. Something is up.

Pure conjecture, but I think it's simply a reflection of optimism about the economy; the airlines are predicting higher demand this year.

Compared with trips to the Caribbean, trips to Europe and Asia on foreign carriers are looking like good value to me.

Something is up for sure. I paid $670 to go half around the world last November (Houston to Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia).

When i looked last week mid week it was like $660 ewr to bon early May, then later in the week $700ish and of course when I needed to book it was $800. If I saw $1040 rt I would have passed and gone somewhere else for sure! As I posted in the other thread, travel with ff points has more than doubled as well!!

I started watching fares from Boston to Bonaire in June of last year. I eventually cut back one week in length (saved $500) and bought the most expensive round trip tickets ever, for us, at $1250 each, about twice what we paid last year.

Pure speculation, but the best explanation I've heard is that United and Delta are trying to make up for lost revenue from hurricane-forced loss of flights going elsewhere in the Caribbean. Again, pure speculation.

Yes, something's up. Those prices are like trying to fly from Canada all the way to the U.S. But that's because there are only 2 major airlines here I guess. We use points anyway, and just pay the added taxes (ie., about what a FARE within Canada cost a decade ago). But hey, now the Can. airlines even let us pay for checked baggage!
