Geez Mass-Diver, I didn't insult or belittle you one iota, what's your beef? And you weren't PM'd 'cuz I wanted other folks to be aware of the law and chime in if they knew stuff. I am quite happy that you found that big hunk of bone, but you seem to have misinterpreted the point of my concern. Please do not insult me or others on this board, especially with incorrect statements. I certainly have a great deal more than "a couple years of college bio" under my belt... I TEACH college bio.
Now that that unpleasantness is done with, I am pleased that you quoted CFR 18.26. It's not part of my electronically accessible files, so I could not easily quote it online. Thank you for posting it. If you read it, you will note that your bone must be registered. I dare say you or your pop has this well in hand already. Once registered, your item is given a PERMIT. You must have a permit, or you're in violation.

I am unaware of section 102 only applying to individuals at sea. Our labs refer to it for personnel on beaches. If you do happen to know that it definitely applies to maritime instances exclusively, I would be very receptive to another quote or link showing that. By the way could you link the site where you got CFR 18.26 from? I need to save that on file.

Your lab is probably correct, it could be applied to beaches as well. Remember not everything is black and white.

I'm editing all my posts except this one.

Here's the link:

hmmm... guess I'll edit mine too. Never done this before to the whole stinking thread, should be very strange for everyone else viewing. neato.

You edited out CFR 18.26!! Argh, that was the BEST ONE.
Collection of Marine Mammal Parts: The Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 (Public Law 92-522, 88 State. 1027, 95 Stat. 979, 16 USC 1372) generally prohibits the collection and possession of any marine mammal parts. Under 50 CFR 18.26, the collection of certain dead marine mammal parts is allowed, as follows:

a Any bones, teeth or ivory of any (non-endangered) dead marine mammal may be collected from a beach or from land within 1/4 of a mile of the ocean. The term "ocean" includes bays and estuaries.
b Marine mammal parts so collected may be retained if registered within 30 days with an agent of the National Marine Fisheries Service, or an agent of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
c Registration shall include (1) the name of the owner, (2) a description of the article to be registered, and (3) the date and location of collection. Items so collected and registered must be retained in the ownership of the collector. The sale of such items is prohibited.

By the by do you know what sort of whale that's from? How much does that thing weigh?

It seems you folks have "made nice" after some heated discussion - that's great. Are the rest of us going to get to see the picture? Or has it become a state secret?

Curious...
Scuba-sass :-)
