This forum is for questions, stories, and recollections about diving history and history-in-the-making. Many events have shaped diving. Invention, discovery, strife, hunger, recreation, and curiosity are all intertwined. Like most human activities, accidents and injuries have also played transformative roles.

The great majority of the cumulative knowledge presented in diving classes at all levels resulted from accidents that scared the hell out of, injured, or killed someone. Thanks to all the pioneers the preceded me, living or not.

Sea stories, folklore, and legends are an integral and entertaining part of oral maritime history. The waterfront has always attracted "interesting characters" who seek out adventure in countless ways including exploration, exceeding established limits (not always successfully), treasure, and enterprise. They are also frequent participants in undersea history and help make it colorful instead of dry and academic.

Diving isn't limited to people getting wet. Diving bells, submarines, deep submersibles, bathyscaphs, atmospheric diving suits, and ROVs also "dive". Scuba diving has also played significant roles in their history.

Thousands of Scubaboard posts contribute to the total narrative that is diving history. Many discuss personalities and events that shaped diving today. Others are observations and experiences or re-counted stories from various conversations and media. History is a funny thing; participants often don’t recognize the importance of an experience until years later when the "big picture" comes into focus. Our primary objective is to discuss and explain diving history. We also want to document the stories, observations, and insights of Scubaboard members before they are lost to time.

Little "gems of history" show up in Scubaboard posts spread all over the board. Few can be reproduced, but they can be referenced or Hyperlinked in order to add depth to new threads and replies to questions. Scubaboard is already well represented in diving-related Internet searches. Many members discovered Scubaboard through them. The difficulty is these "historical gems" are hiding among literally millions of messages and can be hard to find. All the artificial intelligence of search engines can’t compete with the collective wisdom of Scubaboard members.

Moderators may move selected threads into this forum in an effort to consolidate some of these "historical gems". It won’t always be practical without changing the context of posts. Please use the "Report" button to suggest entire threads that you think would be better suited here. Also, moderators may occasionally move threads to the Avenue of the Divers: Scuba Legends & Pioneers sub-forum.

Author Guidelines

New threads are intended to be interesting and informative, not academic studies. Links can be used to help interested Scubaboard readers "drill-down" for more information.

Size Limits
The forum software used by Scubaboard limits individual posts to 10,000 characters including spaces and special formatting codes. You can break a new "Thread" into separate posts as needed.

Original Material
New threads must be original works due to copyright restrictions.

Using Scubaboard Footnotes
Authors who start new history threads are encouraged to include related links to Scubaboard post at the end of their message, similar to footnotes. Related Scubaboard posts suggested in replies will be periodically evaluated and amended to footnotes by moderators. Footnotes below are an example and help explain how to format them.

You can add the "footnote" header below by adding this to your new thread:
Code:
