Hello all.

I couldn't find the thread where GLWC members were discussing this year's Ford Sea Horse Film Festival so here's a new one.

I'm a member of the Ford Sea Lancers and some of our members are also members of the Ford Sea Horses. So, while at my club's meeting last week I learned that the Ford Sea Horse film festival was just cancelled for this year.

The reason given for cancelling the show was 'facility issues'. The film fest has traditionally been held in February in Dearborn, MI. I do believe it was moved to in April and Farmington Hills, MI for this year. But unfortunately it has now been cancelled. Bummer as it's usually a very good show.

Didn't want to bum anyone out but did want to get the word out so people could plan accordingly.

North American Shipwreck & Dive Show™ March 11, 2006 - West Bloomfield, Michigan

Diving, Exploration and Discovery

The North American Shipwreck & Dive Show is the premier exposition of scuba diving, shipwreck exploration and dive travel in the Great Lakes region. We feature compelling presentations on the latest shipwreck discoveries in the Great Lakes, accounts of diving expeditions around the world, information on the latest scuba gear and underwater photographic equipment, and dive travel to locations everywhere. Our exhibition halls display everything from the newest scuba equipment to artifacts from the oldest shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. Recreational and technical divers from every level of training meet with each other and with dive industry professionals in an atmosphere of fun and creativity.

Free Exhibitions

Visit our Exhibit Hall and see it all for free! Our Exhibit Hall has everything in the world of scuba diving and underwater exploration. Scuba diving equipment, underwater cameras, diver propulsion vehicles, travel information, rescue and recovery teams, maritime museums, dive shops and boat charters - see it all and see it for free!

* Want to see the whole wreck on one dive? Want to cover a mile of reef on a single tank? Think about an underwater scooter! In-water demos and product demonstrations.
* Isn't it time to upgrade your scuba gear? See the latest in scuba diving technology and underwater exploration equipment. In-water demonstrations and hands-on displays.
* Looking for new scuba diiving destinations? Meet with the industry's top dive travel professionals and plan the diving trip of your dreams.

Exciting Presentations

The 2006 Show has presentations for every diver, and for everyone interested in the maritime tradition of the Great Lakes.

* New to Scuba Diving? Try out scuba diving in a relaxed setting in our Olympic-sized pool. Sign up for a "Discover Scuba" session at the Show and see for yourself what it's all about!
* Learn about underwater photography and videography from the pros! Find out how to take stunning stills and knock-out videos, even in cold water. Check out our displays of underwater photos and videos.
* They're still down there! The cold fresh water of the Great Lakes preserves thousands of shipwrecks. Vessels that sank in the 1800's look as if they went down last year! Learn about our amazing underwater heritage that is unequalled anywhere in the world!

North American Shipwreck & Dive Show™

Jack,

I let them know when the first post regarding this show was posted. It went to the general membership but was responded to by members asking everyone not to attend this show due to past history.

Paula:

This show is for the benefit of the local dive community! Its total focus is on providing a venue, and a program that all can enjoy. Said another way, it has no parochial focus, if ya' know what I mean.

I'm guessing that two of the club's members who said not to attend this show have the sames first initials: J - One male, and one female. There's a whole lot more than meets the eye - Truly!

There has been, and continues to be a significant amount of planning for this event, and builds upon the successs of our experiences gained in our production of the 2004 event.

Our intention is to donate some of the show proceeds to DAN, and to the Great Lakes Maritime Institute. In the longer term, once we have established a cash reserve to cover expenses, it is our intention to make additional cash donations to other non-profit organizations having a focus on the maritime history of the Great Lakes, and on preserving the wrecks of the Great Lakes.

Presenters who have discovered new wrecks in the Great Lakes are already asking to present their programs at the show, Exhibitors are asking for their applications.

The show sponsor, the Great Lakes Maritime Institute, is going to bring a number of models, and artifacts from the Dossin Museum for viewing. We even have a dive magazine exploring writing an article about the event in one of their issues in either January or February.

It's going to be a great event. I encourage you to be you own person, and if you want to attend, you should.

Dennis

I'm eager to see the new show... if the show that you guys coordinated in 2004 is any indication, then it should be a good one.

Too bad politics and egos have to get in the way of diving and socializing!

Regards,
bob

I know that I plan to attend this show in March. I would not be suprised to see additional members of the Great Lakes Wrecking Crew in attendance. It would seem to me that this would be a good time to get together and plan the upcoming dive season. I will be posting this in the main body of the GLWC forum as I am not sure how many members pry this deeply into the sub forums. This might be a good time to discuss printing a batch of goods with profits being donated to a worhty cause.

Paula,

I don't know who's spreading the bad wishes around your club, as we have had no relationship w/ the Sealancers at all. We would certainly like that to change. I am going to go out on a limb without consulting my co-chairs, and ask if you will present the following to your membership:

We will offer you (the Sealancers) a complimentary booth at our show. You can use this to further your membership, increase your awareness, or anything else you think you might want to use it for, within the scope of our requirements and limitations (IOW, we won't allow those that wish us ill will to use this for their negative purposes). We expect greater than 1500 people there, and most of them have never heard of the various dive clubs.

We believe that there is a place at this show for the many dive clubs in the area.

I really hope that you take us up on that offer. I also hope that my co-chairs don't smack me upside the head!!

Jack

Dennis / Jack,

No encouragement is needed for me to be my own person. However, my attendence is something that will not be known until closer to show time. I devote much of my time in the Winter months to endeavors other than SCUBA.

By writing my original post in this thread I simply wanted to state I had forwarded the information to several local buddies. The information did get forwarded to the club. The reply asking us not to attend only went to the friends I had originally sent the information to, not the entire club. No details were provided.

I am confused by the statements saying 'some' of the proceeds would go to DAN. & then the longer term intent for 'additional cash donations'. Is this a fully non-profit / charitable endevour?

I will forward the invitation regarding a booth to the club president / board.

Paula

edit: see next post

We do not yet have our 501c3 (non-profit) paperwork for this year (we are a new organization), but that is the intent of where we would like to go with this show. Some of the proceeds will go to DAN, some will go to GLMI, and other not yet determined. Obviously, we will use some for seed money for the following year's show.

Thank you for forwarding our offer to your board. I think it could be good exposure for them.

I hope you can make it to the show.

Jack
