I only voted yes, because the question was acceptable vs. unacceptable... I don't wear my mask on my head, but only because it works better on my eyes. But I also think that if you want to put it on your head, well then that's your choice, but as far as being "unacceptable" is another story.

I'm not looking to fan any flames either... just stating my opinion.

Over 1000 dives and I will put my mask where I want, usually on forehead, if removed before exiting the water.

Newbie w/ 8 dives voted (in the other thread) that I don't put my mask on my forehead. They teach you that it's a signal of distress, but I have a feeling people fall back to doing it anyway because it's the easiest thing to do.

Someone posted (again, other thread) that they put it on their head backwards with the strap in front -I might try that.

I must say, though, that given a situation where the chance of confusion about distress is low (like if I dive with a group who generally put their masks on their forehead), I'd probably do it too. OTOH, if it's just me and my buddy, others may get confused, so I wouldn't do it in that situation.

then why does it matter to remove before you exit the water???? The point is that if on your forhead, then that means you're on the surface.....another surface signal that you are not okay.....sign of distress.....yes, I know that most people think it's more convenient to put it on their foreheads, but it is also importand to know your signs!

people who wear their mask on the forehead are cool :D

i would be even as concerned of having my mask knocked off of my forehead and into the water and gone gone gone $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ i just put it down around my neck so it can strangle me!!!!! lol ;)

at least 8 distressed divers yesterday...wow, it boggles the mind to calculate the odds that they all had a problem on the same day at the same dive site.

'Mask on forehead' doesn't mean squat. If I see yours positioned that way, I'm not assuming anything unless there are other obvious indications that you need assistance.

Really, it's time to put this illogical myth to rest...

The split of those who wear the mask on their forehead vs. those who do not is about 30/70. I'm curious to see the lifetime dive count as relating to this topic.

Over 500, but in all honesty I only do this occasionally - in a lake or spring while talking with another diver, or in a calm ocean waiting to be picked up by boat. Clearly this would be inappropriate in the surf or in rough ocean. But on to serious matters - "Surface" is about to start. Time to pull down the mask, or "up" if it has a choke hold on your neck, put the snorkle in your beer, and relax.

To review:

- Putting it around my neck obstructs the backup reg i have on a necklace
- Putting it backwards is annoying and i don't like it
- Leaving it on my face is great if its choppy (did this on friday), but i see better with it off if its calm
- So it goes on my forehead

The "sign of distress" thing is annoying. I'm sure that was invented to keep BOW students from losing their masks in class -- which I'm sure is a pain for the instructors, so they're inclined to terrify their students into submission no matter what lies they have to concoct -- but I wish instructors would stop the lying.

150 dives, BTW.

I did the mask around the neck for around 100 dives until I got my wing dump caught open on the way into the water one time and after thinking that one through, decided I wanted to keep my backup reg un-obstructed.
