We are going on acruise in May and flying on Midwest airlines. The problem is I am planning on taking my own gear and midwest says
Sports Equipment:
The following sports equipment will be accepted free of charge in lieu of one piece of the free baggage allowance:
• Bowling equipment (including bowling ball, bag and shoes)
• Fishing equipment (including 1 rod - max. 13 feet, 1 reel and 1 small tackle box)
• Football equipment (including helmet, shoulder pads, etc.)
• Golfing equipment (including a golf bag)
• Shooting equipment
• Boogie boards

Codeshare: Sports equipment will be accepted on the codeshare services as checked baggage according to the most restrictive carrier's acceptance policy. Special handling charges will be calculated according to the Midwest Airlines tariff.

Midwest Airlines Baggage Charges:
Bicycle $80.00 each way
Bicycle Box $25.00 purchase
Scuba Equipment $50.00 each way
Surfboard $50.00 each way
Wind Surfing Equipment* $50.00* each way
Hang Gliding Equipment $50.00 each way
Whats up with this I figured if you could pack it in your normal checked luggage and be under weight it wouldn't be a problem. Is this the normal procedure ? I am not taking a tank or weights.

joetex0777:
If it fits in your normal luggage and is within the weight requirements it is considered normal lugage. Tanks and ponies must have valve removed. Done it many times.

Have fun...
Yep, altho I have never flown that airline - this should still be true.

I carry my regs, masks, computers in my roll-on to increase probability that those pieces get there when I do, yet since roll-ons are required to be gate-checked on smaller planes - I carry cameras, PC and meds in a small backpack that never leaves my person.

Most airlines allow 2 - 50# checked bags with L+W+D in inches limite to 62", 1 roll-on called carry-on luggge, and a personal bag like a laptop bag or backpack. Wouldn't know the precise limits for that airline.

These all have screwy form factors and/or densities and don't work in common luggage so this 1 bag trade-off is a good thing.

The other items including scuba gear will pack as common baggage so use that allowance and it's all good. If you are a heavy packer then you can pay the extra for the gear.

I've been flying USAirways and pack everyhing except my regs, meds and a sandwich or two in a standard suitcase. I can get by with one standard roller and one 28" shoulder bag (checked). My carry-on is a small plastic cooler. They always want to take a look at the carry-on but I've never had anything turned down. They don't seem to care about the BC, DUI weight system, wet suit, fins extra reg, tools, etc in the roller. I once did pack all my regs and stuff in the checked-in shoulder bag and they did open it. They will also let you pack a tank in lieu of a bag. But the suckers are so heavy it will limit your other stuff.
