All good advice, just a couple of things to watch out for:

The bus from the airport can take up to 1 hour 20 minutes on bad days as it sometimes stops at both airport terminals and sometimes stops at both Playa del Carmen bus stations too, also there are major road works on the highway in Playa at the moment, so it usually takes a route through smaller streets in the town. If you're unlucky with ferry and bus connections it could take you some 3.5 hours, though this doesn't happen often.

Also, be careful with the ferry departures, the timetable can be difficult to understand and may change without notice, also the ferry websites are not always accurate.

My advice for the return journey would be to visit the pier in Cozumel to check, or call on the day or the day before to be absolutely sure. There are two companies, they speak English and the local numbers are Ultramar: 998-881-5890 (Cancun) or 984-803-5581 (Playa), and Mexico Waterjets: (987) 872-1508, (987) 872-1588 (Cozumel) or (984) 879-3112 (Playa).

All that said, the ferry is a great way to arrive to Cozumel, most the ferries have outside seating upstairs and you can get a nice view. If it's choppy watch out for seaspray!

Thank you to all for the advise, looking forward to a great trip. Feeling much better now about flying in to cancun and making the trip over.

We just completed that route last week. The "ADO" aka bus leaves Cancun every 15 minutes or so. The last bus was at 11pm. The fare was about $4.00 one way - per person. The ride is about an hour depending on traffic. The ferry on the other hand is a little less regular. The ticket for the crossing was $11.00 USD per person. It was running about every hour last week...but should you miss it there is a great fish taco stand on the beach about 25 yards from the ferry. Have a taco and a beer and wach for the next boat......your on vacation.:cool2:

Whoops......wwturner is talking about the bus that departs from the city, NOT the airport....just a little FYI......

I will be taking Mayair later this month. Would love the exploration end of the trip and save the money, but am travelling with 2 children. It just makes the trip easier to take the puddle jumper over.

Can anyone tell me the amount of time to clear customs at Cancun? does it take more than 30-40 minutes?

It all depends on how many other planes come in when yours does. My experience is that 30-40 minutes should be fine. But the potential exists for much longer.

Did anyone mention Never buy round trip tickets for the ferry! It does not save money, and on your return you may have to wait hours for your ferry while the other one is ready to go. Just buy a ticket for the next boat, whichever is next when you get there.

Has anyone ever stayed at the Palace they include airport transfers from the Cancun airport. Just curious how that went?

Not to rain on the parade, but if you are prone to seasickness, be sure to take your meds before you board the ferry!! Sit outside, watch the horizon, and do NOT put your head down if you begin to feel bad. This ferry ride can be very choppy and rocknroll. I missed a day's diving for this very reason on my birthday once... when I got off that ferry, I sat at the ferry station on a bench for 30 mins while friends went for meds for my husband & myself. Missed the dive boat due to moving to the next bench...sit 15 mins, then repeat the routine. The return trip from Coz to Cancun doesnt start nearly as rough, due to the barrier island protection on the west side of the island. Again, not to argue against taking the ferry, just want to warn a fellow diver of a possible problem. Wouldn't want anyone else to have to miss Santa Rosa wall on their birthday... not bitter... not bitter... not bitter... oops, did I say that out loud?
