I had the exact same symptoms from 1 dive with a wet breathing rental reg set.
Scubapro I think.

Its never happened again. I should have switched to the alternate but this was my third dive ever...it didn't seem bad unless I took a deep breath but apparently it doesn't take much to wreck your day.
 
The cause is Ostreoptis Ovata.
The Poseidon Jetstream (Odin) and Xstream are regulators that create a fine atomization of any water that may be drawn into the second stage.
The second dive is usually the one that triggers the fever attack but if you are used to changing regulator every 50 bar (sidemount technique or speleo technique) you can have a fever even after the first dive.
The incomparable performance of these Poseidons is balanced by this inconvenience due to the Ostreoptis toxin.
Here in Italy it is only present in some regions and for a few years, so this phenomenon is still little or nothing known.
