I am planning to go to Key Largo in April. I would like to hear the experiences there. especially hotels and resorts. I have no idea where we are staying. I have looked at Island Bay Resort. All opinions welcome.

Paul,

There is a lot of info on the Board concerning Key Largo. I suggest you do a search on "Largo" and see what comes up. I don't have an input on lodging because I have already nailed down my condo for a trip in May.

If you go to my webpage, you will find a page dedicated to Key Largo Boat Operators (complete with links to their websites and comments from Scubaboard members). Also on my website are many links to Key Largo information (including lodging).

To find this stuff, click on my URL below and follow the "Dive Documents" link to the boat operators, and click on "Many More Links" to find Key Largo under the "Dive Travel" heading.

Good Luck!

I just got back from Key Largo last week. Stayed at a place called Bay Breeze Motel. You can find them on the web. I thought it was an excellent place. Simple, small, clean, family run, and the price was right - $99 / night. It was about the cheapest place I could find and was surprised at the place. The room I had had a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen/living room area with a futon.

As far as diving: I dove with Dixie Divers, who are actually partnered with Paradise Charters. Totally excellent service! However, all their dives were with escorts, which was a good/bad thing. They were very good to point out stuff I usually miss, but I didn't have the opportunity to just do my own thing.

I also dove with Conch Republic Divers. I would recommend them as well. They were very accomodating and flexible.

I'm not sure if this meets your needs but Kelly's On the Bay was top notch, as far as motels go. Decent rooms, nice pool, nice dock where you can sit under a hammock or hop in their hot tub. Their dive operation was excellent, with two boats. I've said this on other posts, however: if you plan to be in Key Largo for less than 6 days, you may have to jump around to different dive operators to get to the dive sites you want to go to. For example, a given operator might only do the Duane once or twice a week, and that may not coincide with when you are there.

We have spent 2 weeks in Key Largo every summer for the past 5 years. Since we take the whole family, we usually rent a condo for the 2 weeks. Kawama Towers and Moon Bay are both nice. This year, we're trying something a little different and staying at Coconut Palms in Tavernier. Found it thru this discussion forum!

I agree with the other comments you've already received -- a search will turn up LOTS of info. BTW, also do a search on Tavernier, since it is literally within a couple of miles of KL.

For dive operators, we have used Quiescence, Wreck Divers, and Island Reef Divers. I would rank IRD as best -- small operations, six-pack boat and no divemaster so you're on your own. However, the guy who runs it is very knowledgeable and does a great job explaining the dive site and what to look for. He is also extremely flexible and accommodating -- willing to work with you on schedule and dive locations. Wreck Divers is also good, equally flexible and great to work with. He also will do night dives -- the Benwood is a great nite dive! Quiescence was okay, but we only dove with them once and won't use them again since there are much better operations (IMHO!).

Enjoy, and please post a trip report when you return!
