You can't go wrong with the Humann/DeLoach series. Pretty good for rec divers. There are also pocket size editions and a snorkelling version.

The Humann and DeLoach books are the best for detailed information in an easy to use format. Buy directly from them so the money goes to their organization:

For a small, more portable guide, check out the Guide to Corals and Fishes by Greenberg. You can even buy a waterproof pocket version and take it on boats or underwater - I have and it's great.
