The bus/ferry option is not bad. It is my preference and why I came up with the website provided earlier.

i've done the bag drag lots of ways and kinda enjoy it.
this is the first year that it looks like my incoming flight will match up well with maya air so i will give it a shot. will do the bag drag returning.
guillermo77 on this board runs a transportation service and will have a someone meet you as you come out of the terminal for a very reasonable price. that would be my third option if the bus and maya air flights do not line up well. you can also get him at cancungotravel.com.
btw, cabs cun to playa are much more expensive than going in the opposite direction. if i recall correctly guillermo77 charged me $40. usa each way last may.
what you do NOT want is a collectivo van service which makes frequent stops on the way to or from the airport. with guilllermo it is your van only.

Yea my private van guy does about 40 for a van. Nothing wrong with the bus though. The buses very nice and comfortable. I like to think my Spanish gets better watching the movies in Spanish. It doesn't, but I like to think it does...

I have done the bag drag several times and enjoyed it. I would suggest the ADO bus. It is probably the least expensive($10) but you rely on their schedule. To the extent possible, walk towards the bus terminal inside the terminal as long as you can. Once outside, the guys are relentless in trying to get you in there van, car, etc. On my last trip, I had two tell me the bus had already left even though it was still at the terminal. Also, I did not know if I would be going to Playa or a timeshare presentation.

It is cheaper if you don't bring many with you. With 4 people that money will get you a van. The times we used the bus it was never a long wait and almost direct, non stop.

I like the bus and ferry trip and haven't used Mayair so far.

In the OP's specific case (landing at 11:09 am, possible Mayair flight at 1 pm), though, there's a high possibility that he/she doesn't arrive in Playa in time for the 1 pm ferry and might have to wait 1 or 2 hours for the next departure (not the worst thing that can happen, the beach is gorgeous, there are many bars and restaurants, and luggage can be left in a locker at the tiny pizza and coffee take-out place at the pier – if not advertized in English, look for the "guardia de equipaje" sign).

I'd suggest trying to make the 1 pm flight to Coz as it would be the fastest/easiest way to get to the island.
Should the OP miss the connection and not want to wait around at the airport for the next one, he/she can then take the bus.
Of course, that may mean losing the cost of the flight if Mayair tickets are non-refundable or not making a reservation and hoping there's room on the 1 pm plane.

Thanks everyone! I think I may do the bag drag on the way to Coz now that I know there's something to do in Playa if I need to kill time... you had me at gorgeous beach and bars

Since it's just me, I'll just grab the ADO bus and try my luck on making the 1:00 ferry. I'll probably do Maya Air on the way back to CUN for the peace of mind of making my flight back home.

Now we always took our pile of luggage and stuck it next to the table at Senor Frogs while waiting for the ferry. It is my understanding though if you hire a tricycle guy to take your bags to the dock you can somehow check them in early? So they are in the secure area and you can then walk around with out all the stinkin' bags. Maybe someone who has done this can give the details? Since I had heard that we have always been close to ferry time, so I never got to try it.

Oh and if you get the correct ferry, there may be a band playing on the trip on the outside deck. Latin Ga is the band that was always on the smaller Ultramar ferry. I have heard that Mexico Waterjets might have a band too, but never saw it.
