Are weather conditions unpredictable throughout the year, or are there certain periods when the weather is generally milder?

Usually late April through September have good conditions but as the summer progresses there is more opportunity for tropical weather. As to current, I have been on these wrecks with little current and a few times seen the mooring balls nearly dragged under by current. The Gulf Stream just does it's thing, sometimes it sweeps out a little more and other times it hugs inward.

I have for years done an annual trip, actually was just down there a month ago. But not my old time road trip. I usually start in Jupiter or even the panhandle if doing my Heavy Metal tour (Oriskany, Spiegal, Duane, Vandie) and then work my way south to the Keys. These days I use Conch Republic (Tavernier) for my taxi service. For the Vandie I have had success with Captains Corner.

Weather allowing late August is cool because you can get the Grouper Aggregation in Jupiter and WPB and then hit the Keys. Up on the Gold Coast when you hit your dive site the captain will yell DIVE, DIVE, DIVE! But anywhere in Florida it is DRIVE, DRIVE, DRIVE. There are no integrated resorts to speak off and in terms of $$ and dive count, just go to Cozumel. Of course, Cozumel has nothing like the Spiegel but at least the natives are friendly and there is happy hour!

Seeing this Spiegel Grove thread motivated me to sign up to post. Lurker no more. In 2009 I spent the month of December in Florida and dove up and down the coast and Keys. My travel partner was a scuba fin manufacturer who was demo'ing his "Manta Ray" fins at DEMA and on many dive boats and for shops there. He was very experienced on the SG. We did 4 dives on it on that trip and I shot video on one of them. Of my 400 dives those were some of the top dives. Did not eclipse my encounter with a pod of 9 killer whales in California with a stare down 3 feet from a 25 foot female, but the SG is awesome. We lucked out with medium current. On the last dive this very experienced friend had to do a lengthy deco stop and really pissed off the Boat crew. He refused to come up when I was ready. He was always pushing the no deco limits. It was my last dive I did with him. But, what a great month! I found these cool pics of the SG pre-sinking.
