First set of regulators for a newbie?

In SE Asia all operators will be happy to supply you with "yoke' tank. Some better one would have tanks come with duel fitting. But if you insist on DIN then you better ask ahead because you might not like the answer.
My rec Apeks reg is in Yoke form and I do have the respective DIN converter and adapter.

As for the FREE flow, I remember watching a video on you tube showing a rupture LP hose emptying a full tank in 80 sec!!!!! While a rupture HP hose actually took several minutes longer.

There is a whole thread i just stumbled across on this subject on SB. Pretty much endless debate on plus and minus of each. I personally dont fault either but yoke is so much more common and works fine.

DIN vs Yoke. Like the bc argument backpack versus jacket. No right answer but standard yoke is what newbies usually get exposed to and learn on. So i think you have to lean that way advising a new diver. Which of course perpetuates yoke's dominance.

The widespread adoption of DIN is like the metric system changeover...been just over the horizon for thirty years. Despite fervent advocates. I would also suggest if DIN was that much greater a system it would be the standard by now. Really great improvements usually win out.

Conshelf 14 or Titan set up - you can get them at bargain basement prices on EBay all day long. Get a good second stage instead of an "octo" - Forget the computer if you're single tank diving. Just use the tables and a watch for a bottom timer. JMO but computers are not really necessary for everyday recreational diving - they're a luxury item that can wait if you want to

Depends if his instructor taught him to use tables or not. It's possible to do Open Water on computer only now. I agree that he shouldn't go overboard on a computer though. Even the most the basic models give what is necessary.

The primary purpose of the computer isnt to record his nitrogen, that's a great added benefit. The primary purpose is to monitor his depth/buoyance.

I have three family members that recently went through SDI OW training. They were taught to use tables and a computer. In fact, I was a little disappointed that the print on the tables was kind of fuzzy and hard to read.

The primary purpose of the computer isnt to record his nitrogen, that's a great added benefit. The primary purpose is to monitor his depth/buoyance.

What dive computer monitors buoyancy? I would tend to disagree with you anyway. Depth, bottom time and Nitrogen saturation, are all primary reasons to carry a computer. ..And with the addition of higher O2 nitrox breathing gas, tracking of o2 exposure is also important.

I just want to point that that somehow the ENTIRE but the (US, Burma and Liberia) world has successfully managed the switch to the metric system. It really is a better system. It not about having been over the horizon so much as the US and two other hold outs are in the rear view mirror.
