Pretty sure that most shops want their DM's in the brands of gear they sell.

I would agree, but the OP is in Thailand and said that that is not the case there.

My experience is that shops don't pay DMs and don't really care what gear they use. It is true that most shops teach classes primarily to sell gear, and an instructor in the employment of the shop might be expected to help sell some gear, but DMs are pretty low on the dive shop totem pole. Even ones that can fix regulators! That's speaking from experience.

How about a good ole steel backplate with some webbing and a few d-rings...simple, easy and way less expensive than a jacket style. Very minimalist approach, IMO. I dive a steel plate in the winter and aluminum plate in the summer. If I need to add weight to either one, I have two weight pockets that get put on the cam band, works on either setup.

Steel plate will provide additional weight which will be more evenly distributed across your upper and middle back which also means less weight on the weight belt or in the cam band pockets and you'll most likely trim out easier horizontally in the water.

I wish someone would've put me in one from day one, I'd have never purchased a jacket style setup.

Unless of course, you're stuck wearing what the shop sells. Even then, I'd look to see if they sell a BP/W setup. Good luck with your decision!
