;) Hi all finished up OW this past weekend at Tobermory Ont. Had agreat time and now know I still have a lot to learn. Did one extra dive to 60ft had a great time and learned what the termocline is like (cold). Have a trip planned to the Keys in September. I was wondering if I should try to get my AOW before this trip or wait till I return and get some more dives in first Thank

I would say get a few dives in but there's nothing saying you can't go right into AOW. The more training the better and safer diver you will become. I'm at the point now where I'm doing one class and when I finish that I do another...Right now I'm working on my DM and next Tuesday I'm doing an Advanced Nitrox class. After that I'm heading into the Deco realm. After the DM it's on to instructor. Bottom line is, get experience then get more experience...Dive often and train...By all means have fun. And a BIG congratulations on your OW cert...Geat job....

I wondered the same thing myself. I got my cert over the weekend at Dutch Spring and we hit 2 themoclines, surface temp 81, 34' temp was 75, 57' temp was 62-63.

I was planning to hit the caribbean after getting certified and asked would it be better to get my AOW first. All answers to the question were a definite yes! And after thinking about I admit their right for various reasons.

1- To get more dives under my belt and felt more comfortable at depths beyond 40

2 - Alot of good wrecks, reefs sights in general are at depths greater than 40 (depending where you go of course). Aruba, Keys and Cozumel seem like the exceptions.

3 - I dont really want to do my AOW with someone I haven't been diving with as I love the way my LDS works.

4 - Want to do Nitrox before I go also.

Congrats on your cert though, getting it just makes you want to dive more, atleast for me!!

Welcome to Scuba Board...
Congratulation

As posted earlier, there's no reason why you can't go ahead & get your AOW, but it's not necessary either to dive in the tropics...especially Florida. Florida is very easy diving & most of the dive sites are 45 feet or less. One thing about Florida diving is that a DM won't accompany you on dives, so if your navigational skills are not quite up to par....by all means, get your AOW & practice, practice, practice your navigation!

Enjoy! and congrats on your OW :D

Congrats with the cert. I would get a few dives in and then do your AOW.
